Amber is a highly sought-after fragrance, with its subtle,
euphoric, warm and exotic aroma. Contrary to popular belief, there is no true 'Amber essential oil' - rather,
Amber oil is an extract of one or more tree resins, generally found in a solid or semi-solid form. There is no
one tree that produces amber resin, so there is a great variety of products sold as 'Amber Oil' that vary
greatly in aroma and quality. This amber is very earthy, without a hint of harshness that may sometimes accompany
tree-oils.
Amber by itself is a semi solid mass of tree resins and gums with much of the base material coming from the Liquidamber orientalis tree.
To get the finished product commonly referred to as 'Amber oil', it is prepared in a base of beeswax and is combined with other essential oils and carriers. Studies have shown that properly prepared Amber has psychological actions which alter brain waves, and thought to increase heart energy and enhance sensual pleasure.
There are many types of amber oils on the market, most of which contain synthetic fragrance oils or synthetic carrier oils. The aroma of these oils vary widely. Amber has become a generic term, and so one can find all types of oils, being sold as amber oil, that have no relation to the aroma of amber.
The first and original amber was from ambergris, a waxy substance that was found floating on the ocean or washed up on the shore in ancient times. It can be refined into a oil with a strong, but pleasant aroma. In ancient times, no one knew the source of this mysterious substance, and yet it was highly valued. Ambergris became a mythic substance. Later, it was determined that ambergris (meaning gray amber) came from the sperm whale. Today, it is thought that the sperm whale regurgitates the ambergris after eating squid (or cuttlefish, one of its favorite foods). This occurs because the squid bones irritates the stomach lining of the whale; the ambergris being produced as a counter-irritant.
Our Amber is a formulation using amber essences and extracts as it's base, with organic essential oils
and sunflower oil added to make them useable in a traditional essential oil form. The essential oils in the
blend have been added to give a slightly richer aroma to the base of ambers - not to cover or detract from
them in any way. This is really a fantastic synergy of botanicals; the formula includes: Amber Essence
Extract and Premium Dark Amber Extract with several aroma-enhancing organic and wildcrafted essential oils, plus a small amount of carrier oil which all bring out the richness of Amber's treasured aroma.
This viscous, light-honey colored Amber oil blend can be worn neat as a perfume, mixed in a massage oil,
or blended with other essential oils for your own creation. Add a few drops to a drawn bath for a luxurious
soak. It blends nicely with many other oils, most notably
Rose oil, Jasmine oil, and Patchouli
oil - though we have not yet had the opportunity to try every combination!
Amber's grounding aroma is nice for meditation or yoga practice. It's woody, smooth aroma blends nicely with
many other oils. The aroma is very pleasant and long lasting, and frequently has people asking, 'What
