A member of the Marigold family (as is calendula) Tagetes has bright yellow flowers and is sometimes called Southern marigold. The bright sunlike color of the flowers eludes to her doctrine of signatures in that she helps to expand and uplift the light of the heart.

Native to old world North America and Mexico. Passionate gardeners often use this ornamental shrub as a border plant in gardens. Tagetes is said to provide protection to one's home, heart, and family.

A nervine, antispasmodic, and tonic, Tagetes is currently used in China for coughs, colds, sores, and ulcers. The Mayans used Tagetes for headaches, fever, and abdominal pain. The Aztecs used it to lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation, and to relax and calm nerves. Precautions: phototoxic, avoid direct sunlight several hours after applying. Can irritate sensitive skin. Dilute if necessary.

Suggested Use:

Diffuse or apply topically. Can be used in natural perfumes.

Possible Actions:

Traditionally has been used for treating wounds, as an insect repellent, for infections and for coughs. Also indicated for bunions, calluses, corns and fungal infections.

Can be supportive in cases of anxiety and nervousness. The aroma is very uplifting.

Cautions:

Tagetes is a very potent oil. May cause skin irritation for some people.
