From Anana Aromatherapy: A base note with a warm earthy woody and balsamic scent, Valerian essential oil is steam-distilled from the rhizomes of Valerian officinalis. The essential oil is an olive-green to olive brown in color with a warm rich earthy odor and a distinct 'musk-like' character of great complexity.
Valerian is a perennial herb with short rhizomes and aromatic feathery leaves with small pink or white flowers that bloom (in the Northern hemisphere) from June through September. The plant is native to Asia and grows up to 1.5 meters high. Also cultivated in Russia, the Baltic states, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Britain, Scandinavia, Hungary, China. The plant is also known as common Valerian, Valerian root, and garden heliotrope.
Valerian has been used as a medicinal herb since the time of ancient Greece and Rome. Known to herbalists as 'all heal', Valerian is a warming, sedative herb with bitter principles. Valerian is used to calm the nerves, assist with pain relief, stimulate the appetite, lower blood pressure, relax spasms and improve digestion.* Both Hippocrates and Galen recommended Valerian as a remedy for insomnia. The plant was sometimes sewn into the wedding clothes of grooms in medieval Sweden to ward off the "envy" of the elves. Perhaps it was truly to welcome the protection of the elves into the sacred marriage.
Researchers have pinpointed the sesquiterpenes valerenic acid and valerone as the active constituents, exerting a calming and restorative effect on the central nervous system. In Germany Valerian has been pronounced to be an effective support and aid for the body's needs.
Valerian essential oil is recommended for insomnia, sleep challenges, nervous indigestion, migraine, and nervous tension and restlessness. Externally, Valerian has been used for skin complaints, such as ulcers, eczema and minor sores and (closed) wounds. In Europe, Valerian essential oil has been used for cholera, epilepsy, and various skin complaints. The oil is also used in perfumery and soaps for its musky and woodsy aroma.
Valerian is derived from a Latin adjectival form of the personal name Valerius. It comes from the latin verb 'valere' meaning "being well", "feeling good", and "having a good morale". This is a reference to the medicinal properties of this plant. What a lovely name for a plant. It is truly a signature of the plants ability to support one in 'feeling good' from being well rest and feel grounded and emotionally balanced.
