Post Severe Depression and Anxiety Help Needed
I am new to this board, but need some advice for my brother in law. He has had depression for over 20 years and has been on all kinds of drugs over that time. They work for a while, but then he develops a resistance to them and they stop working. He was recently in the hospital and now as severe anxiety as well.

I want to help him with essential oils and have done some research, but it appears he will need to blend a mixture since everything I have read only has certain essential oils to help his condition.

Based on my studies, it appears the oils would be Bergamot, Clary Sage, Jasmine, Neroli, Orange, Ylang-ylang and Rose (there are others, but these appear to be the main ones, and he can only afford so much).

If these are blended together, what mixture should he use, and if needed, what carrier oil should he use as well. For him putting the mixture on his skin is going to work best for him.

Thanks for any help on this.

Based upon my experience, I would forego Jasmine, as its effects are somewhat similar to the much less costly Ylang Ylang. If you decide to use it, however, only one or two drops in the mixture would be enough.

I would also add Sandalwood to the blend, and jojoba would be a very good and relatively inexpensive carrier oil.

As for percentages, I would use 3 parts Bergamot, Clary Sage and Sweet Orange, 2 Ylang Ylang, Neroli and Rose, and 4 Sandalwood, with 3-5% total of essential oils. The blend can be adjusted according to your brother-in-law's response.

Thanks, Merlin. So for 3% to 5%, what does that mean? I'm new to this, so need a little more explanation. How much jojoba oil?

Decide upon what size bottle you are wanting to use. Then figure out 3-5% of that capacity for essential oils, and then calculate how much (in drops or milliliters) for each one. Then fill the rest of the bottle with jojoba.

The ananda website has info about how many drops of each essential oil in one ml and such.

Merlin,

I am trying to mix up the oils now, but need a little more clarification. You say to use a certain number of parts of each essential oil, but all the calculations I find on this site talk about drops per ML, not parts. So when you say to use 3 parts Bergamot, how does the translate into drops per ml? I am using a one ounce bottle, so now I just need to calculate out the various number of drops for each oil.

Thanks.

Will you be including carrier oil(s) in the 30 ml (one-ounce) bottle? Or will you be making up a blend of essentail oils only that will be mixed with carrier oil before application?

I will be including the essential oils in the one ounce. So I need to figure out the total drops for a 3% mix for one total ounce. I will put the drops in the bottle and fill it with the carrier oil to make the full one ounce. That is how I think I am supposed to do it.

Thanks.

One part is equal to approximately .075 ml, out of 5% total essential oils in a 30 ml bottle (1.5 ml oils). Use the drops per ml table at ananda to figure out how many drops of each essential oil.

For example, 3 parts Bergamot = 3x .075 = .225ml. There are 35 drops of Bergamot per ml, multiplied by .225 = about 8 drops.

Merlin,

Last question (hopefully!). I have mixed up the oils now and am giving them to my brother in law today. How should he use them? Where should he put them, how many drops, etc. Also, should he put a drop on his pillow at night as well as any other ideas? Thanks.

I would recommend beginning by shaking a few drops into his hands, rubbing them together, and smelling the oils. Then a few drops rubbed into wrist area and feet, and see how that goes.
