Haven't seen the studies -- patchouli was originally from India on cloth to prevent moth infestation (in fact, cloth made in England was eventually "spiked" with Patchouli because the Indian quality was thought higher and the perception of the smell increased the cloth value

Ticks are usually dealt with using cedarwood and/or geranium, but that certainly doesn't mean it wouldn't work. Interesting too about Catnip, that its first testing was done to repel cockroaches, so there too, might be one for ticks.
