Post Borage Seed Oil: For Eczema and Arthritis
Borage seed oil does double duty as a carrier for all sorts of irritated skin conditions (particularly atopic dermatitis), as well as arthritis, and stiff and aching joint in general, and may in fact be supportive for respiratory inflammation as well.

The secret of Borage Seed Oil is the highest level of Gamma linolenic Acid found in any plant source. And seeing how most of us are deficient in this essential fat (one that our body cannot make from other fats or oils), it stands that many of us have inflammatory activity going on related to its deficiency.

In the body, whether it is topically applied or ingested, it is converted to Gamma-linolenic acid is converted to dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid, where it then prevents the formation of other "pro-inflammatory" molecules.

Borage seed oil has become popular as a supplement in capsule form, but having a teaspoon from the bottle isn't so bad (I just tried it -- it's rather benign).

Research has demonstrated it effective as a treatment topically as a treatment for atopic dermatits (a reaction of the skin where the system is overloaded with toxins and the liver cannot expel them all, mostly in the very young -- and more than likely a result from over-pampering with common synthetic child-care chemicals; for cleanliness, skin softening and the like. This is a theory, and has not yet been proven). However, the oil does work, and it may be a combination of factors which enable this result.

Research has also demonstrated the oil to be effective when massaged on location of inflamed and/or painful joints. The oil does the same process as discussed above, preventing the formation of pro-inflammatory molecules.

IN GENERAL, inflammation throughout the body is considered a significant part of the aging process, and utilizing borage seed oil in some way -- be it topically or igested, is a smart thing to look into.
