Essential Oils for Stress Relief

Nervines strengthen and tonify the nerves and nervous system. In times of tension and anxiety, essential oils relieve stress, induce a feeling of calm, and take pressure off of the cardiovascular system.

The Complete Guide to Aromatherapy

According to Salvatore Battaglia in The Complete Guide to Aromatherapy, the relaxing nervines include: Bergamot, Clary Sage, Roman Chamomile, Lavender, Geranium, Neroli, Sandalwood, and Ylang Ylang. These aromas work by relieving stress and anxiety, whether applied to the skin, inhaled directly, or diffused. Lavender and Ylang Ylang can even reduce blood pressure, thanks to their high percentages of Linalool.

To ameliorate anxiety and soothe stress, try the following blend:

Ylang Ylang

6 drops Highland Lavender

4 drops Vanuatu Sandalwood

3 drops Bergamot

2 drops Ylang Ylang

Apply to the wrists or temples for immediate stress relief. (Note: Bergamot is photosensitive, so stay out of direct sun while it’s on your skin.) Can also be diluted in a carrier oil such as Sweet Almond to be used for massage. Diffuse for an air of calm in your home or office.

Relax and enjoy!
