How to Make your own mosquito repellent

Typically, an insect replellent will include at least one essential oil with a lemony ‘citral’ scent…Lemon Verbena would make an excellent choice instead of Citronella in our most popular formula. Use catnip 2% in a base of water/alcohol or unscented cream. Add another 2% of Lemon Verbena and 6% of Geranium. You’ll actually smell wonderful while keeping the bugs away! Some folks will add 1% Peppermint as well, as the heating/cooling nature seems to keep the no-see-ums from landing.

If you find the Geranium cost prohibitive, know that much of the effect is derived from the Catnip – so you can also give a go to 25 drops catnip, 25 drops citronella, and 25 drops cedarwood per fluid ounce of your total mixture.

So, to mix 8 fluid ounces (this is A LOT, enough to use for a couple of weeks!) use a base of either 1 cup 1/2 vodka or rubbing alcohol and 1/2 cup water (for a spray on formula) or 1 cup of unscented lotion (such as our jojoba/coconut cream base). Add 100 drops each Catnip and Lemon Verbena, and 300 drops (or 12ml) of our organic South African Geranium. Mix well. You may decrease the amount of essential oils used in the spray on formula if you find it too strong, or simply add another 1/4 cup of half-and-half alcohol and water. And experiment! Add a little peppermint if you like; cedarwood is also popular in these formulas.
