Boost your Happiness Factor with Bergamot, Grapefruit & Rose!

Try this recipe for a wonderfully uplifting blend: As we move into the fall season and say farewell to summer, we start to think of the inevitable onset of much cooler temperatures and how Winter will arrive before we know it.  As the days become shorter with fewer hours of sunlight, some folks start to feel a bit blue.  So I thought I’d share a recipe I call “Sunshine in a Bottle”! I have modified the blend and recommend using it in our Synergy Diffuser at home or in the office – though certainly any diffuser will do.  (You can put a drop or two on a tissue and lay it on the dash of your car too!)

Therapeutic properties of the ingredients:

Grapefruit, like Bergamot, is known for its uplifting qualities.

Grapefruit: You can easily add a happy burst of sunshine to your life by using Grapefruit essential oil in a diffuser blend (recipe below). The sparkling aroma, partnered with Bergamot, can banish a case of the blues in a heartbeat and it’s always near the top of the list of my favorite antidepressant oils! The emotional and energetic qualities of grapefruit are uplifting and cleansing, as it reduces tension and exudes happy, outward energy. It’s like sunshine in a bottle!  (Note: the recipe below is a great choice for our pocket diffuser, so you can take the aroma with you!)

Nearly ripe bergamot fruit on the tree.

Bergamot: The essential oil is cold pressed from fresh fruit rinds and can be used to address anxiety, depression & tension with great success. It’s bright, citrus-like aroma is a sure fire way to lift your mood and it also has antiviral properties, stimulates the immune system and is a powerful antispasmodic. Bergamot is the oil I run out of more often than any other as I use it in many different blends AND as a major ingredient in natural perfumery!

May Chang (Litsea): The fresh, lemony aroma of May Chang sweetly compliments the other citrus oils in this wonderful blend and it’s joyful quality is sure to put a smile on your face.  Steam distilled from the fruit of Litsea cubeba trees in China, May Chang reduces fatigue and is known for having effective antimicrobial and antifungal properties.  The cool, calming effects of May Chang may also be helpful for those in need of deep sleep.

Rose is known as the 'premier heart opening oil'.

Rose Absolute: Ahh, our favorite heart opener: Rose! Rose is very emotionally uplifting; a gentle tonic for the heart, it eases shock, grief, depression and soothes anger. It also heals deep despair and is a tonic to the nervous system. Rose oil is well known for balancing hormones during menopause and has sedative properties too. Also, only one drop is required, and can be obtained from a sample vial of the oil.

Jasmine Absolute: Jasmine’s exotic, sweet aroma lends a slight floral quality even though there’s only one drop in the recipe!  Only one drop is required, which can be obtained from a sample vial of the oil. A little Jasmine goes a long way, so you must resist the urge to use 2 drops.  It has antidepressant properties and is great for stress-related conditions. It is often used in skin care products for dry, sensitive skin and it’s a really wonderful oil to add to a hot bath to release the tension of the day. Again, it’s so powerful that one drop (*after* you’ve filled the tub)  is often enough!

Did you know that Jasmine blossoms are collected before sunrise, and handled with great care, in order to preserve their delicate scent?

DIFFUSER BLEND RECIPE:

You’ll need an empty 5 ML bottle to create this blend.

Note: Be careful with the citrus oils as they are top notes and the drops come out of the bottle much faster than Jasmine & Rose!  I highly recommend using a plastic pipette for each oil, which will provide greater control for counting the drops. You can temporarily remove the orifice reducing insert from any essential oil bottle, and replace it after you’ve used a dropper or pipette for measuring.

Safety Alert: This blend is NOT for use on the skin! Bergamot is phototoxic and must not be applied to the skin undiluted.

  • Grapefruit – 80 drops
  • Bergamot – 70 drops
  • May Chang (Litsea) – 10 drops
  • Rose Absolute (Bulgarian) – 1 drop
  • Jasmine Absolute – 1 drop

I hope you enjoy creating Sunshine in a Bottle!  :-D

I love making essential oil blends. The options seem endless. Rose is another essential oil that is on my list to purchase.

    Thanks for sharing

I would imagine that wearing this oil would be fine, as in the winter, the sun isn’t so strong and it’s not like one would be sunbathing. And would be nice to dilute it with
a carrier oil, and wear it under ones clothing, or behind the ears, on the neckline under
your hair, on feet, etc. I don’t think sun exposure would be a problem in the winter months.

Agreed – and some folks run a little through their hair. It’s a lovely blend, and will certainly have those around you saying “You smell nice…” :-)

    Hi Marilyn,

Well, this varies extremely from oil to oil and further depends somewhat on the bottle. Truly the best way to measure drops – as it can be challenging to manage the slowness of thicker oils, and the rapidity of thinner ones, is to remove the orifice reducer from the neck of any bottle, and use one of the pipettes available on our ‘bottles and pipettes’ page, or simply an eye dropper.
