Here’s a great confirmation of Frankincense essential oil’s cancer-fighting abilities. In this study, Boswellia sacra essential oil was used, though in other research, Boswellia carteri and Boswellia seratta have demonstrated these same effects. (See more here on each of these Frankincense CO2 essential oils, and our new Sacred Frankincense).
This is one in a great many peer-reviewed scientific studies confirming the anti-cancer action of Frankincense, at concentrations which leave healthy cells unaffected. (Here’s our review of research using Frankincense against breast cancer cells).
Additionally, it was the heaviest-molecular-weight constituents of the Boswellia sacra Frankincense essential oil that were shown to have the most potent anti-cancer action. Good to know, as the CO2 distillations of Frankincense carried by The Ananda Apothecary DO have naturally have greater amounts of these larger molecules than steam or hydro-distilled varieties.
As in previous studies, researchers bathed human cancerous cell cultures in solution containing Frankincense essential oil, which caused apoptosis – or ‘natural cell death’ – of these cells. (This does NOT usually occur with cancerous cells; instead they are ‘immortal’).
What’s new about this study is that tumors of these same cancerous cells were implanted in hairless mice. This allowed very direct observation of tumor size.
The ‘experimental’ group was injected at the tumor site with a Frankincense essential oil & saline solution, and the ‘control’ group with the saline solution only. Significant reduction in tumor size(s) was noted at only 14 days!
Researchers concluded that Frankincense essential oil might be a “might be a useful alternative therapeutic agent for treating patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma, an aggressive cancer with poor prognosis”.
Truly, EVERY study we’ve read investigating Frankincense as a treatment for cancers has concluded in a similar manner – that Frankincense warrants further investigation as a cancer treatment.

(By the way, we do not, in any way, condone animal testing! However, it is only through such studies that natural remedies will be accepted by the “Western” medical community. We do believe it would be a beneficial to the world if Frankincense essential oil was given as a valid option for cancer treatment).
