Frankincense Oil’s Proven Anti-Cancer Activity En-Vivo

Here’s a great confirmation of Frankincense essential oil’s cancer-fighting abilities. In this study, Boswellia sacra essential oil was used, though in other research, Boswellia carteri and Boswellia seratta have demonstrated these same effects. (See more here on each of these Frankincense CO2 essential oils, and our new Sacred Frankincense).

This is one in a great many peer-reviewed scientific studies confirming the anti-cancer action of Frankincense, at concentrations which leave healthy cells unaffected. (Here’s our review of research using Frankincense against breast cancer cells).

Additionally, it was the heaviest-molecular-weight constituents of the Boswellia sacra Frankincense essential oil that were shown to have the most potent anti-cancer action. Good to know, as the CO2 distillations of Frankincense carried by The Ananda Apothecary DO have naturally have greater amounts of these larger molecules than steam or hydro-distilled varieties.

As in previous studies, researchers bathed human cancerous cell cultures in solution containing Frankincense essential oil, which caused apoptosis – or ‘natural cell death’ – of these cells. (This does NOT usually occur with cancerous cells; instead they are ‘immortal’).

What’s new about this study is that tumors of these same cancerous cells were implanted in hairless mice. This allowed very direct observation of tumor size.

The ‘experimental’ group was injected at the tumor site with a Frankincense essential oil & saline solution, and the ‘control’ group with the saline solution only. Significant reduction in tumor size(s) was noted at only 14 days!

Researchers concluded that Frankincense essential oil might be a “might be a useful alternative therapeutic agent for treating patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma, an aggressive cancer with poor prognosis”.

Truly, EVERY study we’ve read investigating Frankincense as a treatment for cancers has concluded in a similar manner – that Frankincense warrants further investigation as a cancer treatment.

For more on this subject, visit www.pubmed.gov and search for ‘frankincense cancer’ or ‘essential oils cancer’. And here’s a link to this particular research abstract, and to the full research article.

(By the way, we do not, in any way, condone animal testing! However, it is only through such studies that natural remedies will be accepted by the “Western” medical community. We do believe it would be a beneficial to the world if Frankincense essential oil was given as a valid option for cancer treatment).

How does Frankincense need to be administered to get such benefits? Orally? Topically?

    • Eric@Ananda says:

Thanks for your inquiry. We cannot really recommend any protocol for administration, as 1) We’re not qualified health professionals, and 2) Everyone’s case is unique. The best solution would be to ask someone locally, such as a naturopathic doctor, or a chiropractor who includes a broad range of therapies in their practice.

In general: Like any essential oil, Frankincense is easily absorbed by the body using any of the 3 routes: topically, orally or inhalation. We have customers who apply the oil ‘neat’ on location, some who dilute in a carrier oil (Frankincense may cause skin sensitivity in a very small number of users), and others who let it run for extended periods in their diffuser. For diffuser use, one might consider running the unit continually, on low output, in a relatively small space – a bedroom, for example. This however, may be the least ‘efficient’ use of the essential oil itself, with much of it wafting out into the air, un-breathed.

Frankincense essential oils are safe to ingest in small amounts. ALL protocols for essential oil ingestion discuss very small amounts of the oils – on the order of 1 to 3 drops, 1 to 3 times per day. In no case are oils ingested daily without end; protocols are used only for the duration of the condition being addressed.

You see that use of the oil is truly flexible, and one need really receive specific, personal instructions – or do their best to ‘intuit’ the best use for themselves.

      Hope this helps!

Regarding how much to use for Cancer I suggest watching the youtube video with “Tiffany gets Dr. H.K. Lin to get specific about Frankincense”

Initially in the southarfrican tanimal tials they gave aprox 4 Gramms per day , there is a weight relationship but I dare say the north africans chew it for hundreds if not more years , Saudies put it in their coffee .. Indians have it in their Vedas.

And most important like Gold & Myhrr it is excellent for Cel rejuvination and balancing of the cell
