Cool New Research on Using Essential Oils to Improve Athletic Performance and More…

Peppermint may improve athletic performance.

Peppermint essential oil may improve athletic performance.

Recently published studies suggest that by using essential oils, you may actually improve athletic performance. Other new data shows essential oils will stop mosquitoes and ticks from biting (and we’ll give you an effective recipe), and even significantly aid in eschewing tobacco products.

Study #1: Improve Athletic Performance with Peppermint Essential Oil
A study reported in the March 21st Journal of the International Society of Sports Medicine examined the effects of ingestion of Peppermint essential oil on sports performance. Participants ingested one drop of pure Peppermint oil per day for ten days, in 1/2 liter of water.

Geranium can repel ticks and mosquitoes.

Geranium essential oil is a proven tick repellent.

Markers of athletic performance were examined before and after Peppermint essential oil ingestion. Every marker of athletic performance tested on the treadmill significantly improved over the test period, including: total work (watts), time to exhaustion, and volume of oxygen consumption. The researchers chose peppermint, as it is: “famous natural herbs used for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, antioxidant, and vasoconstrictor effects”.

Researchers made the following conclusion: “The results of the experiment support the effectiveness of peppermint essential oil on the (improvement of) exercise performance… Relaxation of bronchial smooth muscles, increase in the ventilation and brain oxygen concentration, and decrease in the blood lactate level are the most plausible explanations.” See the entire article here.

Black Pepper Essential Oil Reduces Nicotine Cravings

The aroma of black pepper essential oil reduces nicotine cravings.

We like ingesting one drop of Peppermint oil ‘neat’, but that’s us. BE PREPARED for an invigorating experience should you choose to try this - start with the oil in a cup of water if you at all think you may be shocked by the intensity. We find an instant feeling of greater mental clarity and oxygen to the brain. We haven’t yet slipped on running shoes and gotten out the door after downing a little Peppermint, but it’s on the agenda!

Study #2: Repel ticks with Geranium Essential Oil
And and previous research has shown Catnip essential oil to be a HIGHLY effective mosquito repellent, too – you’ll find both in our Bug Be Gone blend – and we’ll give you an idea for a recipe at the end.

Reported in the March 25th 2013 edition of the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry is a study noting the significant efficacy of Geranium essential oil as a tick repellent.

How To Make Your Own Highly Effective Anti-Mosquito And/Or Tick Formula:

The ease of use of these essential oils is amazing. Here’s our formula for an all-around, super-effective, biting insect repellent - for each 8 ounces (1 cup) of water:

- 8ml Geranium Essential Oil
- 4ml Catnip Essential Oil
-12ml  ‘Tween’ emulsifying agent (see our ‘Bottles and Pipettes’ page for this)

Shake well and spray on clothing and skin. This is a 5% essential oil concentration formula which should be a perfect, all around concentration!

Study #3: Inhaling essential oils of Black Pepper and Angelica essential oil significantly reduced nicotine cravings.
In a study entitled “The Effects of Aromatherapy on Nicotine Craving on a U.S. Campus: A Small Comparative Study” published in the March 28th Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, researchers had those addicted to any form of nicotine inhale either Black Pepper or Angelica essential oil when cravings overcame them.

It was found that inhaling the aroma of either oil for two minutes significantly reduced cravings, and that Black Pepper had a more significant effect than Angelica, perhaps because of its stimulating effects. Peppermint essential oil has also been used for this purpose, by placing one drop of the essential oil on the tongue when one was craving tobacco.

On that note, we also carry Nicotiana flower essence, indicated for the same purpose.

So there we have it! Science keeps confirming all the ways essential oils have been used for years. We love it!

I’ve been putting a drop or two of geranium oil on my dogs’ collars when we are up in the north woods of Wisconsin — and no ticks!
