In Case You Didn’t Know: What IS a ‘Hydrosol’?

A hydrosol is the water left over from the essential oil steam distillation process. The highly-aromatic water really contains the complete essence of the plant. Not only does it have properties of the essential oil, but contains other water-soluble, therapeutic constituents of the plant as well.

Distilling Rose Essential Oil

Distillation of Rose Oil, and Producing the Hydrosol

‘Rose Hydrosol’, of course, is the distillate water left from distilling rose flowers – specifically ‘Rosa damacena’, which produces Rose Otto essential oil. Why is THIS hydrosol so special? Because Rose Otto is the essential oil with the ‘highest vibration’ of any oil in aromatherapy. It does SO much…not only does it smell fantastic, but it’s an incredible beauty-care product unto itself…and, well, so much more!

Rosewater: The All-Purpose Beauty and Mood Enhancer

Rose Essential Oil and Hydrosol ProductionRose hydrosol, is one of those ‘heal-all’ products from nature. It can be used for all skin types to improve the skin’s health, enhance your mood, and freshen up a room with a few spritzes. Its versatility makes it an excellent choice to have in your cabinet, purse, car…you name it.

Rose hydrosol is a mildly-astringent toner, helping hydrate dull, tired, dry, and/or mature skin. It has healing and restorative properties much like the essential oil itself: It’s been noted to return that natural glow of the skin, smooth it’s appearance and reduce broken thread veins.

How to Use:

For centuries, rosewater has been used in religious rites and for physical, emotional, and spiritual purposes or healing. Rosewater has long been a staple of beauty and skin care for the upper classes of Europe and the East.

Apply directly to the skin as a spray or with a cotton ball. We just ‘spritz’ it on our faces ;) Its toning properties refine and tighten pores, while its humectant properties help draw moisture into the skin. Use it as often as you like to produce smoother, more toned skin. Many folks definitely notice a glow through regular use.

All Purpose Beauty Care: Anti-Wrinkle, Anti-Acne, Anti-Aging for Every Skin Type

Suzanne Catty, author of Hydrosols, the Next Aromatherapy, recommends Rose Hydrosol as an anti-wrinkle treatment. Rosewater controls and balances sebum production, therefore being useful for both dry and oily skin.

Rosewater can help  restore the skin’s pH, plus it’s ideal to use on problematic, ‘combination’ skin with its balance of properties. It will help fight acne with a gentle, balaned, inflammation-reducing, anti-bacterial effect. It’s reputed to be useful in the treatment of all sorts of dermatitis, as well as being an effective treatment for wrinkles, stretch marks, cold sores, eczema or scars.

Catty also recommends taking Rose Hydrosol internally to help balance female hormones. She writes that by helping balance the endocrine system it can combat PMS, menstrual cramps and moodiness, as well as assist during menopause.

Emotional Rescue:

The scent of Rose Hydrosol can soothe stress and anxiety, calm anger, ease grief and depression and calm mood swings. Just keep a bottle with you, and ‘spritz’ your surroundings whenever the urge strikes you. No one will complain!

The Real Thing:

There is simply no substitute for a true hydrosol, so don’t let anybody try and fool you.

It has become quite common for man-made products to be misleadingly referred to as hydrosols or hydrolats by some manufacturers and suppliers. You may be surprised to learn that many of the ‘floral waters’ available today have been made with synthetic compounds which have no therapeutic or beautifying qualities. Others are produced by adding essential oils or absolutes to water by using alcohol or some other type of dispersant or solvent. This may appear to be perfectly acceptable, since the finished product contains essential oil and has a pleasant fragrance similar to a natural hydrosol.

However, this type of reconstituted product lacks the wealth of vital healing properties present in a true hydrosol - many of the plant constituents were dissolved into the water whilst extracting the oil, so they were never present in the essential oil in the first place! So adding an essential oil to water will never create a product with the same range of healing benefits as a true hydrosol.

Ours, of course, is coming directly from the distiller of our certified organic Rose Otto essential oil, produced in the Kazanlak Valley of Bulgaria – the “Valley of the Roses”…known for being THE most prolific growing region for damascena roses in the world!
