Antimicrobial Essential Oils to Combat the "Superbug"
That's the subtitle of the new book in our collection. As many of you know, MRSA, or Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is a staph bacteria strain that does not respond to some of the most potent antibiotics that are commonly used to treat staph infections. It is produce by one of the developers of "Benchmark Thyme" essential oil, what we think may be the single most effective antibacterial oil in our collection.
According to the National Institute of Health, 2 out of every 100 people carry the bacteria, and could either show infection symptoms when their immne system is weakened, or they may pass it on to others in a similar condition.
The infection can range from a simpe "pimple" to a serious, deadly infection, particularly for those with compromized immune function. We've heared of everthing in between as well, and have had friends with infections that conventional medicinal treatments would not help.
The book explains all of the microbiology of bacterial infections in general, MRSA in particular, and the potential of essential oils as treatments. It also presents data noting that "Benchmark Thyme", a blend of pure essential oils from 4 Thymus zygis strains, "shows good in-vitro potential for the treatment of MRSA colonisation", meaning it prevents the growth of the bacteria, and does so better than other essential oils tested such as Tea Tree.
We think this could be extremely important, as even the scratches and scrapes that APPEARED simple at first on friends, became worse and worse, with no proper explanation from health care professinals, and could even more importantly support health of those in hospitlas where the infection takes on life-threatening proportions. While we cannot be certain the oil would have helped the condition, it has been shown that similar oils DO in-fact reduce colonization and improve healing.
Benchmark Thyme is a relatively gentle Thyme strain (some are very "hot" and are to be used with much caution) yet is a very potent antimicrobial because of its complex chemistry -- it is similar to a combination of thyme and tea tree in one essential oil.
It can certainly be used in place of tea tree, and likely have greater efficacy for your antibacterial/antiseptic needs. While the word of its efficacy is just getting out, it's worthwhile having a little on hand in your home medicine chest!
