What is CBD and how do you use it? Here's the top questions YOU have been asking about our CBD Formulas...
CBD is short for 'cannabidiol', the second most abundant cannabinoid found in common Cannabis sativa, and THE most abundant cannabinoid in legal industrial hemp. Research is uncovering a number of potential health benefits of this cousin to THC which does not get one 'high' at all, but still closely interacts with cannabinoid receptors in our Central Nervous System and throughout our bodies.*
It appears that CBD works primarily by preventing the breakdown of our body's own endo-cannabinoids (molecules with similar structure, made by within the body), strengthening and prolonging their action.
Q: How is CBD used, and what is it used for?
CBD is typically ingested, and all our formulas are made for use in this manner. Our formulas contain 1mg CBD in every 2 drops. There are no common dosage recommendations, and it is suggested that each individual experiment to find what works for them. Approximately 10mg/day is the starting point for many users, and this amount can be increased or decreased over time depending on the user's experience.
Q: Can the CBD formulas be applied to the skin?
Absolutely! CBD itself is lipophillic (meaning 'fat friendly') as are all the ingredients in every one of our formulas. Being lipophillic, they pass through the cell membranes of the skin, being absorbed primarily locally, with small amounts of the CBD and other ingredients passing into the bloodstream.
Topical CBD formulas have been used for have been used for the following conditions: Pain, inflammation, arthritis, dry/chapped skin, rheumatism, headaches & migraines, insect bites, sunburns, and psoriasis.*
As with any topical formula containing essential oils (as do our CBD 'Plus' and CBD 'x3'), one should test for any skin sensitivity by applying a drop of your formula to the underside of one arm and checking for any redness over the next 24 hours, and discontinue topical use should such redness appear.
Q: How do I know which CBD formula to choose?
CBD 100 means '100% CBD'. This is an excellent formula where other ingredients may not be helpful or necessary for your goals. You may also not be fond of the taste of other ingredients in the 'Plus' and 'x3' formulas. CBD 100 can be the most cost-effective means of supplementing with CBD, particularly if you find it supportive to your health goals.
CBD Plus includes a small amount of Hemp essential oil – the steam distillate of the same plant from which the CBD CO2 extract is made – which is rich in terpene molecules that may act synergistically with CBD. This is the formula we recommend for the majority of those wanting to supplement with CBD, and the one many of us at Ananda use ourselves.
In this post, we look at this synergistic action between CBD and essential oils which are known to be safe for ingestion.
CBD x3 contains CBD, Hemp essential oil, and 'super-critical' extract of Frankincense 'carteri' resin. CBD and Frankincense have both been the subjects of anti-cancer research published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. It is purchased frequently by customers undergoing cancer therapies of some kind because of this research.
CBD 'Calm' contains a blend of essential oil rich in terpenes that are recognized to work together with cannabidiol (CBD) in the body. This formula contains, which we personally use daily, includes: CBD (cannabidiol) Super-Critical CO2 extract, Hemp essential oil (also from Cannabis sativa), high in myrcene and β-caryophyllene terpenes, Lavender essential oil (Lavendula angustifolia), high in the terpene linalool, and Grapefruit essential oil (Citrus paradisi), high in the terpene limonene.
CBD 'DeFlame' is our newest CBD formulation, which we're very, very excited about. It has a wealth of ingredients researched for their anti-inflammatory properties, as is CBD itself...this incredible blend contains: CBD (cannabidiol) CO2 extract, Hemp essential oil, Turmeric CO2 extract, Ginger CO2 extract and Lavender CO2 extract.
Each formula is based in MCT Coconut oil (know for its very 'stable' properties, this healthy oil along with the small amount of rosemary antioxidant also in every blend, helps preserve the more sensitive ingredients, like the CBD itself).
Q: I wanted to know if your cbd oils would reduce my anxiety or depression. do they interact with Ativan® or Paxil®?
CBD has been researched for its potentially positive affects on mood disorders. There are no known, as of yet, interactions with prescribed pharmaceutical drugs.
Q: Can you tell me what kind of recommendation you would have as far as which type of CBD to use and how to exactly use it for inflammation?
While we cannot 'prescribe' a formula for any particular medical condition, we ourselves use the CBD Plus formula for inflammation – both CBD and the terpenes found in hemp essential oil have been researched for their anti-inflammatory properties.
How each of us uses it depends on a number of things: how much pain are we experiencing, how sensitive are we to any herbs or other natural 'medicines', our height/weight/metabolism, etc.
We take CBD Plus internally, and generally start with a higher amount (anywhere from 15 to 45mg CBD per day) until we feel it supporting our condition, then slowly use less until we find that 'sweet spot' where we're using just enough to meet our needs.
These amounts will vary from person to person, and because there are really no studies yet defining what a 'daily serving' may be, it is best to experiment for one's self to find one's own optimal intake.
Q: What dosage would one take for various conditions?
Just as described above for support for inflammation, the amount of CBD supplement one uses to support their health can vary greatly from person to person. We have scoured many resources to help give our customers more clear direction in this regard, yet we continue to find the same answer: there IS no definitive answer.
Those of us at The Ananda Apothecary who use our CBD formulas regularly supplement with approximately 10mg to 30mg per day (20 mg to 60 drops, as all formulas contain 1mg per 2 drops). These amounts are relative to our weight and general sensitivity to herbs and supplements (do we find a little of something often works for us, or do we only notice larger amounts?)...rather than being related to the 'reason' we are choosing to supplement with CBD.
