Description

ABOUT THE PLANT

Angelica Essential Oil is a delicate oil extracted from the root of Angelica, a large 'fur covered' plant with ferny leaves and umbles of white flowers. Native to Europe and Siberia, it takes approximately 340 pounds of plant material to produce one pound of Angelica essential oil. From the thirty species of Angelica, Angelica archangelica is by far the most enjoyed for all its applications in aromatherapy. Its potency as a healing plant was noticed long ago, hence the moniker 'the root of angels'.

ABOUT THE OIL

Angelical root oil is steam-distilled from the dried roots of Angelica archangelica. The oil is a pale yellow to orange-brown colored liquid. Its viscosity varies according to the root material used for distillation ad the age of the essential oil.

OF INTEREST

Also known as the 'holy spirit root' or 'oil of angels', Angelica oil's healing powers were considered so strong as to be thought of Divine origin by Europeans. Angelica's history of use spans the entire globe. Stems of the plant were chewed during the plague of 1660 to prevent infection; when burned, the seeds and roots were thought to purify the air. Angelica is said to bloom on the day of Michael the Archangel and on that account is used as a preventative against evil spirits and witches.

Historically, Angelica is referred to as a purifying agent. Missourian tribes smoked it. The Alaskan Aleut peoples boiled the roots for application to both internal and external wounds in order to speed the healing process. The Chinese use at least ten types of Angelica. In fact, Angelica's reputation for support there is second only to Ginseng. Even Plato wrote about Angelica in reference to the legends of Atlantis. With such a long history of consistent praise, Angelica oil is a key addition to your aromatic toolbox.

Angelica Root Essential Oil blends well with: Patchouli, Opopanax, Cistus, Clary Sage, Oakmoss, Vetiver and all Citrus oils.

Safety

Non-toxic and non-irritant. The furanocoumarins present in angelica root essential oil sensitize the skin to UV light. The oil can be phototoxic, and should not be applied to skin that will be exposed to direct sunlight. Because of its coumarin content, internal use of Angelica may interfere with anticoagulant drugs. Always test a small amount first for sensitivity or allergic reaction.

Do not use if pregnant or diabetic.
