Essential oils can heal common warts Common warts are caused by an HPV variety, and can be treated with essential oils. Photo courtesy of

Thanks to the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), many of us experience one of the six most common types of warts: 'common' warts, plantar warts, flat warts, filiform warts, mosaic warts, and genital warts. While most warts will go away on their own, it can take years, and warts can be painful, maybe embarrassing, and definitely contagious.

Bay Laurel Essential Oil Bay laurel, distilled from laurel leaf, has been researched for its anti-viral activity.

Medical treatments for warts include burning, freezing, cutting, and peeling off the concentrated skin. This addresses the symptom, but not the problem. Given that warts are caused by a virus, essential oils with anti-viral properties may dissolve the wart, and stimulate the immune system to cure the root cause at the same time.

Essential oils mentioned in research publications, as well as by professional aromatherapists, for their anti-viral properties include: Bay Laurel, Lavender, Hyssop, Melissa*, Lemon, Tea Tree, Cypress*, Rose-Geranium*, Helichrysum, Eucalyptus and Bergamot, Frankincense*, Garlic, and Thyme*. Oils with * should not be used during pregnancy.

Preparations for Adults and Children 12 and up: Combine in a 12 ml bottle (or simply use these as "portions" for a larger or smaller amount):

4 ml Bay Laurel
2 ml Thyme
1 ml Melissa
2 ml Hyssop
2 ml Lavender

(Our Super Immune blend contains a similar formula of essential oils selected due to peer-reviewed research noting their anti-viral properties).

Soak the affected area in warm water for five minutes to soften the skin before applying oils. Use 2-3 drops of the anti-viral blend for each wart, twice to three times daily. Allow the skin to dry, or cover with a clean bandage. The treatment will take anywhere between 2-8 weeks of diligent application to completely heal the wart and its root virus. Be patient; the natural cure takes longer, but is kind to your body.

If you feel the "neat" essential oil application is too strong, we recommend diluting your formula with an equal part of Tamanu oil -- this carrier too has anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial properties, as well as research supporting it speeding healing of the skin. Tamanu oil can also be applied to areas around the wart before and after application to relieve tenderness and heal the skin.

Preparation for Children Under 12

Dilute 5 drops of the above blend in 2 tsp of apple cider vinegar in a small bottle. Dab carefully onto the wart with a Q-tip to avoid contact with surrounding skin.
