Spring is now in full bloom, but with everyone finally stepping out of the house to smell the blossoming flowers, allergies and sickness are abound. While seasonal changes are known to bring about allergies and sickness, it is important to nourish your body in as many ways as possible to diminish your risk of experiencing these feelings. The bright Spring sunshine will surely elevate your mood, so don't let sinus pressure and congestion bring you down! Find out how you can keep sinus pressure and congestion at bay so you can freely enjoy the beautiful weather.

Causes of Sinus Congestion and Pressure

The causes of sinus congestion and pressure can be simple - irritants in the air, like pollen, can activate our allergies and inflame our sinuses. Cold and flu will inevitably bring the symptoms of congestion and pressure with them. Each individual is unique, and there are many factors that go into what make us susceptible or sensitive to certain allergens. During seasonal transitions, we are typically more exposed to these allergens on a larger scale. We can learn what agitates our sinuses and use that knowledge for the following season!

Treating Sinus Congestion and Pressure with Essential Oils

Skip the Sudafed - there’s an array of essential oils that are just as effective at healing and soothing our sinuses than medicine found at a drugstore. While every individual has unique body chemistry, it is important to note the scientific research into why the chemistry of these plants work in synergy with our body chemistry to help our bodies heal and achieve balance. Here are just a few of the wonderful oils we carry that will bring more sunny days to your sinuses:

Inula

Inula is a powerhouse oil for treating respiratory infections. If you suffer from severe congestion in your sinuses or lungs, this is the oil for you. In fact, Inula has been labeled “the most effective oil for loosening mucus and deep congestion.”[1] This precious oil is composed of borneol and bornyl acetate, which have been found to have anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. In fact, "Bornyl acetate was shown to significantly reduce lung inflammatory responses in mice and may be useful as a preventive agent for lung inflammatory diseases." Just a few drops of our treasured Inula oil will help you kiss the symptoms of the common cold and dreaded sinus infections goodbye.

Blue Tansy

Blue Tansy's deep blue color is due to its chamazulene content, a highly anti-inflammatory compound modified from matracin that turns blue during the distillation process. This anti-inflammatory effect can have a significant impact on sinus pressure. Blue Tansy also exhibits impressive anti-allergic and anti-histamine qualities, without the sedative or uncomfortable side effects of an OTC allergy medication. Additionally, Blue Tansy has a bronchio-dilating effect which is extremely useful for those with asthma or emphysema[2] Just when you thought Blue Tansy couldn't possibly sound better, you'd be surprised to know that it also displays both anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.[3] This is truly an amazing oil to have in your natural medicine cabinet!

Eucalyptus

The invigorating nature of Eucalyptus oil will open your nasal passages and help you breathe deeply. A 2017 study which focused on “the potent anti-inflammatory and anti-infective properties” of Eucalpytus oil found that the oil “stimulated phagocytosis and pathogen clearance of mycobacteria in lung macrophages.”[4] Our Blue Gum Eucalyptus oil is your best bet at clearing your nasal passages, however we do offer two other varieties (Citriodora and Narrow Leaf) which each have their own unique properties and uses. The incredible cooling sensation of Eucalyptus is no doubt one of the most relieving ways to alleviate sinus congestion and pressure. A significant amount of research has been conducted into 1-8, Cineole (Eucalyptol) which is the main chemical constituent in Eucalyptus. These studies have shown the positive impact that 1-8, Cineole has on our sinus and bronchial passages, as well as our immune system. We have an additional wealth of knowledge about Eucalyptus that you can find by clicking here.

Pranafy Blend

Our Pranafy blend is designed to not only open your sinuses, but also help clear built-up mucus that is the root cause of congestion. This effective blend contains Blue Gum and Narrow Leaf Eucalyptus, Myrtle, Scotch Pine, Spruce (Tsuga), Sweet Marjoram, Lavender, Cypress and Peppermint. These oils are all known for their abilities to aid with congestion and pressure. In fact, in a 1994 study, Peppermint oil was highlighted for its “significant analgesic effect,” meaning it’s also a perfect way to treat the discomfort associated with sinus pressure.[5]  This is another added benefit to Pranafy's ability to dislodge deep mucus buildup! Pranafy is an essential blend to own for anyone who has issues with their sinuses.

Clear Passage Blend

Our brand new Clear Passage blend is specifically formulated to clear your sinuses. A mighty combination of Inula, Blue Gum Eucalyptus, Wild Rosemary, and Cinnamon Burmannii, this blend will lift you up and knock your congestion out! While Inula and Blue Gum Eucalyptus have already been highlighted for their potent effects, Wild Rosemary has a high content of 1-8, Cineole (Eucalyptol) which makes it pair in synergy with Eucalyptus. Cinnamon Burmannii tops this blend off perfectly with its anti-inflammatory qualities that will surely do your sinuses a favor.
