Anything to help get rid of chipmunks?

Post by Guest » Wed Jul 20, 2011 4:55 pm

Last fall had a bumper crop of acorns and now we're suffering from lots of chipmunks who are eating my wife's perennial garden. Is there anything to dilute and spray on plants and/or ground to keep them away?

Apparently, the trick to keeping away mammalian pests is scent and taste deterrents. If it isn't delicious, they leave it alone.

Some gardeners have suggested Peppermint essential oil, others Black Pepper essential oil, Cayenne Pepper oil, and Clove essential oils.

Here, also, is a page from an organic gardener that may be helpful:

My wife got something today w/rosemary, cinnamon, and some "mint" oil in it--she said it smells good. We'll see if it works. :P

I have not been able to find a essential oil solution, but we use fox urine pellets to deter our Thirteen Line Ground Squirrels (or called gophers in some states) from tearing up our landscaping. It works really well and it is kind.
