Description

ABOUT THE PLANT

Hyssop is a perennial aromatic small sub-shrub which grows up to 0.5 meters high, with slender herbaceous stems arising from a woody base, bearing whorls of small purplish-blue flowers.
It is native to southern Europe and has been cultivated as a culinary herb and for medicinal uses for hundreds of years. Major producing countries include France, Hungary and Holland.

ABOUT THE OIL

Hyssop is considered one of the strongest antimicrobial essential oils. It contains natural molecules from nearly every class of compounds found in therapeutic essential oils, yet it is still quite gentle.

OF INTEREST

The name comes from the Greek word hyssopus, meaning ‘good scented herb'. The flowers and leaves have been highly valued since antiquity for their therapeutic properties, and it was one of the bitter herbs mentioned in the Old Testament. Hippocrates prescribed it to his patients, and it was commonly used in the Middle Ages. The herb has been traditionally used for perhaps a thousand years for its antiseptic, disinfecting, and anti-infectious properties.
