ABOUT THE PLANT

The Lemon tree is a small evergreen tree up to 6 meters high with serrated oval leaves, stiff thorns and very fragrant flowers. The fruit turns from green to yellow on ripening. Believed to be a species native to southern regions of China, the Lemon tree was brought to Europe and the Middle Eastern countries by crusaders in the 12th Century. Columbus then brought its seeds (along with those of the orange tree) across to the West Indies and thereby founded what remains the largest Lemon industry in existence.

It now grows wild in the Mediterranean region especially in Spain and Portugal and is cultivated extensively worldwide in Italy, Sicily, Cyprus, Guinea, Israel, South and North America (California and Florida).

ABOUT THE OIL

This beautiful, bright Lemon essential oil is cold-pressed from the peels of Lemons organically grown in Argentina. Organic production is especially important with lemon oil, as commercial production typically includes spraying of the fruit with pesticides.

Lemon's aroma is considered one of the lightest in aromatherapy, a nice bright 'top note'. The high temperatures needed for steam distillation would destroy the subtle, fresh aroma of lemon oil and therefore this oil is extracted by cold-pressing the fresh peel. Cold pressing will yield six to seven pounds of oil from one ton of fresh fruit.

Lemon Essential Oil has a refreshing scent that is thought to stimulate the liver and has a gentle, calming effect. Lemon has been researched for its ability to promote clarity of mind and purpose, as well as generally increasing one's well-being and physical energy. We've found this wonderful fine Argentinian oil to be consistently the freshest, brightest we've come across. It's always a favorite at Ananda! Constituents of lemon include limonene, which is responsible for the oil's tangy-fruity aroma, and citral, which is responsible for what we recognize as the lemon note in the aroma profile.

OF INTEREST

Lemon juice is considered the most effective scorbotic (against scurvy). British ships were required by law to carry sufficient juice or oil to treat every person on board with one dose per day as a preventative measure.
