ABOUT THE PLANT

This small fragrant evergreen tree is native to many tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. It reaches 4.5 meters in height with sharp spines, smooth, stiff leaves and small white flowers. The fruit is half the size of a typical lemon and a pale green color.

ABOUT THE OIL

Lime essential oil can be steam distilled, which filters out the phototoxic components, or cold-pressed, which retains the fresh fruit aroma. Fresh, tangy and fragrantly emphatic, this lime essential oil shares much of its therapeutic profile with its citrus cousin, the lemon, and has many of the same astringent, toning and mood elevating properties. Distilled from South African limes, this essential oil has a particularly bright, zesty scent.

OF INTEREST

Originally from Asia, the lime tree was introduce to Europe by the Moors. British ships transporting limes were often called "lime juicers" as crews depended heavily on the lime's high vitamin C content to reduces scurvy during long voyages. Today, it is cultivated in Italy, Africa, the West Indies and the Americas.

Distilled lime oil is extensively used in flavoring food and beverages, especially soft drinks like ginger ale and colas, where as cold-pressed lime is used in high-grade men's toiletries and perfumery.
