Essential Oils and Your Energy Body - An Eco-Conscious Approach
Utilizing essential oils during yoga and meditation will aid in the alignment of your mind, body, and spirit. Essential oils capture the natural, therapeutic power of plants and can help bring balance to your spiritual routines.
The following is a guide to help those seeking to become more mindful and ecologically conscious when using essential oils in their yoga and meditation practices. Keep reading to learn how to apply this knowledge for a deeper alignment with your chakras!
Practicing physical and mental mindfulness
Taking care of your mind and body can lead to a deeper understanding of the self. Whether delving into meditation or practicing yoga, it's important to take the time necessary to connect with the deeper you. Often, we can fall into a pattern of nurturing other relationships and neglect the need we have to understanding ourselves. Taking time to meditate and align your chakras is, of course, essential in bringing balance to your life.
Practicing eco-conscious living can also add fulfillment to your life and is essential in preserving the beauty of Mother Nature. At Ananda, our number one priority is to remain ethical when sourcing our essential oils. Adding essential oils to a meditation and/or yoga practice can add peace of mind knowing that your oils are ethically sourced. Several types of essential oils are in constant demand, which puts stress on the plants and regions where they are sourced from. For example, Atlas Cedarwood, a tree native to the forests of Morocco, has recently been added to the endangered species list. Upon learning this news we immediately announced that we would be discontinuing this oil from our collection. Spikenard and Rosewood are among other great examples of oils we no longer carry due to their endangered status. These examples are part of an ongoing effort at Ananda to ensure that we remain in alignment with the environment, as well as who we are as people. After all, it's Mother Nature who provides us with these plants and we must respect her boundaries.
This could happen with some of your favorite oils in the future if mindful practices aren’t adopted by all companies. What matters is that we always seek sustainable alternatives and support companies that provide ethical choices in the products that they carry.
Use the right essential oils for aligning your chakras
What is a Chakra? Chakras are the circular vortexes of energy that are placed in seven different points on the spinal column. All seven chakras are connected to the various organs and glands within the body.
Chakras in their inherent nature are spinning wheels of energy and light. They have the loving responsibility of taking in, incorporating and emanating energy to keep us functioning at optimal levels. Basically, chakras transfer and maintain the life energy, which is also known as Qi or Prana. Chakras work to keep the mental, spiritual, emotional and physical health of our body in balance. When one energy center is disturbed it affects the energy function of the others in the body.
Here’s a guide outlining some effective essential oils and corresponding poses for balancing each energy center. Many of these poses can affect various chakras, so you must focus your intention toward the chakra that you would like to work on.
Root Chakra (Red): Cedarwood
Poses: Sukhasana, Uttanasana
The Root chakra, located at the base of the spine, is the foundation of the body’s energy. Balancing this chakra will help you feel grounded, healthy, energetic, and safe. Cedarwood encourages this energy with its spiritually grounding property. The oil is high in sesquiterpenes and stimulates the limbic system, which is the center of our emotions and memory. Overall, Cedarwood will strengthen energy and promote adrenal function. Hawaiian Cedarwood is an appropriate alternative to the endangered Atlas Cedarwood.
Sacral Chakra (Orange): Ylang Ylang
Poses: Bakasana, Jathara Parivartanasana
Deeper emotions, such as those related to sexuality, love, and empathy, are connected to the Sacral chakra. This chakra is right in the navel area around the intestines and sexual organs. Align this chakra to get in touch with your feelings and desires, as well as those of the people around you. Ylang Ylang is effective here because of its calming qualities promoted through by the presence of linalool in the oil. Its therapeutic scent will bring you back down to Earth and in touch with your complex emotions. Our Ylang Ylang “Complete” essential oil is better for relaxation since it has less of a heady aroma than our “Extra.”
Solar Plexus Chakra (Yellow): Rosemary
Pose: Urdhva Mukha Uttanasana
This chakra, in the upper stomach below the rib cage, is the center of your personal power, self-control, and will. A healthy Solar Plexus will bring you non-dominating power and get you in touch with positive feelings of self-esteem and effectiveness. Rosemary essential oil is associated astrologically with the sun, a universal symbol of life and individuality. It warms the spirit by effecting with confidence and enthusiasm. We sell two different types of Rosemary oil based on your therapeutic needs, but our Wild Rosemary would be best in this instance due to its balance of aromatic and therapeutic properties.
Heart Chakra (Green): Bergamot
Pose: Chaturanga Dandasana
A healthy Heart chakra allows for the ability to love yourself and others deeply. Bringing balance here will help you let go of hatred, resentment, and grief while learning how to forgive and have compassion. Bergamot has an uplifting nature and a powerful scent, perfect for passionately awakening this chakra. It boosts self-worth and confidence, while opening your heart up to connecting with your surroundings and inner emotions.
Throat Chakra (Blue): Lavender
Pose: Virabhandrasana I
Imagine, stuck in the back of your throat, is everything you have ever held yourself back from saying. Having a healthy Throat chakra will bring light to the meanings of communication and self-expression, which will affect how you experience the world with sound and vibration. You will have more confidence in what you create and communicate. Lavender has been found in Ayurvedic uses to release held-in frustrations and elicit calmness and composure.
Third Eye Chakra (Indigo): Sandalwood
The Third Eye chakra puts you in touch with your intuition and foresight. When healthy, you can clearly “see the big picture” in life. The effects of Sandalwood essential oil are similar to that of Cedarwood because of its effects on the limbic system and the pineal gland, causing its users to find balance with emotions. This makes it an effective oil in opening the third eye, since the brain and nervous system are part of the health focuses that come with aligning this chakra.
Crown Chakra (Violet): Frankincense
Poses: Supta Baddhakonasana, Paschimotanasana
The seventh chakra, known as the Crown, is located at the top of the head - quite literally where you would place a crown. It is believed to be the gateway into the spirit world, enlightenment, and the higher self. When you balance this chakra, you seek wisdom and a higher consciousness aware of your place in the present moment. Frankincense has an incredibly meditative aroma and has been proven to uplift users to a higher level of awareness. This is the main reason why churches have been using frankincense for years. Such an otherworldly oil helps to release nerves and tension so we can focus on our inner selves. It also does a fantastic job of easing all the noise and voices in our head to bring us to a true meditative state.
Integrate what you have learned
Integration is the most important part of any experience. The experiential moment itself can be life-changing or eye-opening, however it's important to assimilate what you have learned into your everyday life.
