Sandalwood oil is a highly valuable product, widely sought and used in the perfume and essential oils industry. Its long history of exploitation paired with many countries’ high demand for sandalwood oil including the U.S. and China has led to recent efforts to conserve this precious resource. However, this history of exploitation and high demand has also resulted in the sandalwood’s production rate and dollar value changing drastically over time. Today, sandalwood essential oil is one of the most expensive and most often adulterated essential oils. Additionally, the types of sandalwood oil produced by different sandalwood species, as well as derivative species such as East African sandalwood, vary greatly.
