The Three Faces of Frankincense: sacra, carterii, and serrata
Why One Frankincense Isn't Like Another: What Boswellia sacra, carterii, and serrata actually contribute and why species alone doesn't tell the whole story.

Frankincense may be one of the oldest traded aromatic materials in the world, yet modern conversations about Frankincense often begin with a surprisingly simple question: Which species is best?
The answer depends upon what is being asked.
If the question concerns aroma, the answer may differ from one person to another. If the question concerns traditional use, history enters the conversation. If the question concerns chemistry or modern Boswellia research, the answer becomes more complicated still.
One of the challenges facing modern consumers is that discussions about species, extraction methods, research compounds, and product marketing are frequently combined into a single conversation. As a result, many people come away believing that species alone determines quality or therapeutic value.
The reality is more nuanced.
Frankincense is not a single plant. It is a family of resin-producing trees belonging to the genus Boswellia. Different species grow across different regions of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and India. Their resins share certain characteristics, yet each species also possesses its own aromatic personality and chemical tendencies.
Understanding those distinctions can be useful. Understanding their limitations may be even more useful.
A Resin with Many Origins
For thousands of years Frankincense traveled along trade routes connecting Arabia, East Africa, India, Persia, the Mediterranean, and beyond. Ancient merchants rarely concerned themselves with modern taxonomic classifications. Resins were often evaluated according to appearance, aroma, region of origin, ceremonial value, and medicinal reputation.

Today we tend to think in terms of species. The three species most commonly encountered in modern aromatherapy discussions are:

Boswellia sacra

Boswellia carterii
-
Boswellia serrata
Each has developed its own reputation. Each is associated with particular regions. Each contributes something worthwhile to the larger story of Frankincense. Yet none exists in isolation from the others.
Boswellia sacra
In recent years Boswellia sacra has become one of the most recognized names in the Frankincense marketplace. Often associated with Oman and portions of the Arabian Peninsula, sacra is frequently presented as the "sacred" Frankincense of antiquity. This association has undoubtedly contributed to its modern popularity.
The resin typically produces an elegant essential oil with a bright, clean aromatic profile characterized by citrus-like top notes, fresh resinous qualities, and subtle woody undertones. Because of its growing visibility, many consumers have come to assume that sacra represents the highest grade or most therapeutic form of Frankincense.
Such conclusions are difficult to support.
Species names alone tell us very little about quality. Harvesting practices, environmental conditions, distillation methods, resin age, storage conditions, and extraction techniques all influence the final material.
A beautifully produced sacra may be exceptional. So may a beautifully produced carterii, or serrata. The species name is only one part of the story.
Boswellia carterii
Boswellia carterii has long occupied an important place within aromatherapy and perfumery. Historically, many commercial Frankincense essential oils were sold under the name Boswellia carterii, particularly those originating from Somalia and surrounding regions.
Modern taxonomy has complicated the picture somewhat. Some authorities maintain distinctions between sacra and carterii. Others have treated them as extremely closely related or synonymous under certain classifications.
For consumers, the practical lesson is not to become lost in taxonomic debates. The more useful question is: What material is actually being offered?
Two bottles bearing different species names may exhibit remarkably similar aromatic profiles. Conversely, two oils carrying the same species designation may smell noticeably different depending upon geography, harvest conditions, and processing.
The label provides information. It does not provide the entire answer.
Boswellia serrata
If sacra and carterii dominate aromatherapy discussions, Boswellia serrata often occupies a different space.
Native primarily to India, serrata has become widely recognized through the Boswellia supplement market and scientific literature.
Many of the studies that have drawn attention to Boswellia over the past several decades have focused on preparations derived from Boswellia serrata resin.
This distinction is important.
Readers frequently encounter references to Boswellia research without realizing that the material being studied may differ significantly from the essential oils commonly sold within aromatherapy. The result is understandable confusion. People read about Boswellia, they purchase Frankincense essential oil and assume the two discussions refer to the same chemistry.
Sometimes they do. Sometimes they do not.
As we will see later in this series, species is only one variable. The preparation itself may prove equally important.
Similar Trees, Different Emphases
- All three species produce aromatic resins.
- All three have long histories of use.
- All three contain complex mixtures of terpenes and other resin constituents.
Yet their chemistry is not identical. Environmental factors, genetics, geography, climate, harvesting practices, and post-harvest handling all contribute to variation.
This should not surprise us. Lavender grown in different regions can vary. Rosemary varies. Helichrysum varies. Frankincense is no different. The existence of variation does not mean one species is universally superior. It simply means that nature rarely fits neatly into marketing categories.
Why Species Alone Doesn't Tell the Whole Story
Species matters.
It would be inaccurate to suggest otherwise. Yet species alone cannot answer many of the questions modern consumers are actually asking. When people inquire about Frankincense and inflammation, Frankincense and research, Frankincense and Boswellia supplements, or Frankincense and specific resin compounds, the species name often becomes only one piece of a larger puzzle.
- Extraction method matters.
- Preparation matters.
- The portion of the resin being examined matters.
- Research methodology matters.
Without those distinctions, discussions about Frankincense quickly become confusing.
This is one reason the marketplace occasionally places so much emphasis on species names while providing relatively little information about how the material was actually prepared. A species name may sound authoritative, but a preparation method often tells us more.
Looking Beyond the Label
For many years the Frankincense conversation centered largely on origin and species. Today the conversation increasingly includes extraction techniques, resin chemistry, and scientific research. That evolution is a positive development. The more we understand about Frankincense, the easier it becomes to ask better questions.
Rather than asking which species is best, we might ask:
- Which species?
- Which preparation?
- Which constituents?
- Which intended use?
Those questions bring us much closer to understanding the material itself.
Where the Conversation Leads Next
The distinctions between sacra, carterii, and serrata are worth understanding.
But they do not fully explain why certain Boswellia preparations appear repeatedly in scientific literature, while others do not. Nor do they explain why some compounds discussed in Boswellia research are frequently associated with Frankincense even though they may not be present in every Frankincense preparation.
To answer those questions, we must move beyond species and examine what is actually present in the finished material.
And that begins with a deceptively simple question: What's REALLY in your Frankincense bottle?
