Breathe Deep™

Respiratory Comfort · Aromatic Blend

A stuffy nose can make the simple act of breathing feel like work.

Breathe Deep™ is one of Ananda's original respiratory blends — fresh, cooling and easy to breathe in, made for the moments when your nose feels stuffy and you simply want breathing to feel easier.

At its heart are Ravintsara and Eucalyptus Radiata, two classic respiratory aromatics, joined by Peppermint, Lemon and Wintergreen for refreshing and penetrating depth.

Formulation Logic

RESEARCH-FORMULATED™ · Formulation Logic, Applied.

Ravintsara and Eucalyptus Radiata form the respiratory heart of Breathe Deep™. Both belong to the cineole-rich tradition of respiratory aromatics, but they are different oils and each brings its own character to the formula.

Ravintsara — Cinnamomum camphora ct. cineole — has long had a particular place in aromatherapy for respiratory use. Its defining chemistry is the reason we chose it here. Research on 1,8-cineole has examined mucus, nasal obstruction, respiratory symptoms and inflammatory airway conditions in humans, giving us a useful modern understanding of why cineole-rich oils have remained so important in respiratory formulations.

Eucalyptus Radiata brings the familiar fresh, penetrating Eucalyptus character and strengthens that cineole-rich center.

Peppermint works differently. Its menthol produces the unmistakable cooling sensation in the nose and upper airway. Human studies have shown that menthol can increase the sensation of nasal airflow and reduce respiratory discomfort — one reason Peppermint feels so immediately satisfying when breathing feels stuffy.

Together, these five oils make Breathe Deep™ what longtime Ananda customers remember: fresh, immediate and wonderfully easy to breathe in.

Applications

Personal Inhalation

Place 1–2 drops on a tissue or personal inhaler and breathe naturally for brief periods.

Diffusion

Diffuse lightly in a well-ventilated room, then switch the diffuser off once the aroma is established.

Topical Use

Diluted in a carrier oil, it makes a good chest or upper-back rub.

Aroma

Cool, bright and clean.

The first breath is Eucalyptus, Ravintsara and Peppermint — cold and clear. A little Lemon keeps it bright. Underneath sits Wintergreen, a sweeter, deeper mint that stays after the chill has passed.

Fresh, never medicinal. The kind of aroma you go back to for another breath.

Questions & Answers

Before you buy

QCan Breathe Deep™ actually clear a stuffy nose?

It can make a stuffy nose feel clearer, which is an important distinction.

Peppermint provides menthol, which activates cold-sensitive receptors in the nose. Human inhalation studies have found that menthol can increase the sensation of nasal airflow and cooling even when measured nasal resistance does not significantly change.

Breathe Deep™ is formulated for that fresh, cooling sense of respiratory comfort. It is not a medical nasal decongestant.

QWhat makes Breathe Deep™ different from simply using Peppermint or Eucalyptus?

The formula combines two different aromatic effects.

Peppermint contributes menthol and its immediate cooling sensation. Eucalyptus radiata and Ravintsara contribute the cineole-rich respiratory character traditionally associated with eucalyptus-type preparations. Lemon brightens the blend, while Wintergreen gives it a sharper, more penetrating finish.

The result is broader and more complete aromatically than relying on Peppermint or Eucalyptus alone.

QCan children use Breathe Deep™?

No. Breathe Deep™ contains Wintergreen, which is naturally very high in methyl salicylate. For that reason, Ananda does not recommend this formula for children of any age.

Adults should also review the cautions before use, particularly if pregnant or breastfeeding, taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication, sensitive to aspirin or salicylates, or living with reactive airways.

Ingredients

A concentrated aromatic blend of pure essential oils:

Ravintsara · Eucalyptus Radiata · Lemon · Peppermint · Wintergreen

Notes & Cautions

  • For external aromatic and properly diluted topical use only. Do not ingest.
  • Because Breathe Deep™ contains Wintergreen, it should not be used with children of any age. Wintergreen is naturally very high in methyl salicylate.
  • Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and avoid use if taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication, with bleeding disorders or salicylate/aspirin sensitivity, or before surgery.
  • Dilute appropriately before topical use. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
  • Diffuse conservatively in a well-ventilated space.
  • People with reactive airways or fragrance sensitivity may find strong aromatic exposure uncomfortable; discontinue use if respiratory irritation occurs.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

See Safety & Responsible Use for Ananda's general essential-oil guidance.

Which Blend Should I Choose?

Both Breathe Deep™ and PranaFy™ came out of Ananda's early years, but they were made for quite different moments.

Choose Breathe Deep™ when breathing feels stuffy.

The fresh, cooling one, for when your nose feels stuffy.

Choose PranaFy™ for conscious breathing, yoga and meditation.

PranaFy™ came out of Ananda's early yoga community. It is the more layered, forested blend, made for slowing down and bringing attention back to the breath.

Lineage

Breathe Deep™ is one of Ananda's original Legacy formulations and became one of the most popular blends in the early Apothecary.

There wasn't much mystery to why people liked it. When breathing felt stuffy, it was fresh, invigorating and a pleasure to use.

The formula hasn't changed.

Further Study

The research below examines constituents relevant to the formulation logic behind Breathe Deep™. The studies do not test the finished blend itself.

Menthol & the Sensation of Clearer Nasal Airflow

Eccles R, Jones AS. The effect of menthol on nasal resistance to air flow. Journal of Laryngology & Otology. 1983;97(8):705–709.

Thirty-one participants were exposed to menthol vapor. Although measured nasal resistance did not consistently change, most participants experienced an increased sensation of nasal airflow and cooling.

Menthol & Nasal Airflow During a Cold

Eccles R, Jawad MS, Morris S. The effects of oral administration of (-)-menthol on nasal resistance to airflow and nasal sensation of airflow in subjects suffering from nasal congestion associated with the common cold. Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology. 1990;42(9):652–654.

In 62 people with nasal congestion associated with the common cold, oral menthol significantly improved the sensation of nasal airflow, although measured nasal resistance did not improve. The menthol was given orally as a lozenge rather than inhaled.

Menthol & Respiratory Comfort

Nishino T, Tagaito Y, Sakurai Y. Nasal inhalation of L-menthol reduces respiratory discomfort associated with loaded breathing. American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. 1997;156(1):309–313.

In 11 healthy adults, nasal inhalation of L-menthol reduced the sensation of respiratory discomfort during experimentally loaded breathing. This provides a second piece of human evidence for menthol's sensory respiratory effects and is particularly relevant to the Peppermint in Breathe Deep™.

1,8-Cineole & Nasal Obstruction and Secretion

Kehrl W, Sonnemann U, Dethlefsen U. Therapy for acute nonpurulent rhinosinusitis with cineole: results of a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. The Laryngoscope. 2004;114(4):738–742.

In a randomized, double-blind trial involving 152 adults with acute nonpurulent rhinosinusitis, standardized cineole produced significantly greater improvement than placebo across the study's symptom score. Improvements included nasal obstruction and rhinological secretion.

The cineole was taken orally rather than inhaled, but the study provides useful human evidence for a principal constituent associated with cineole-rich respiratory oils.

1,8-Cineole & Acute Bronchitis

Fischer J, Dethlefsen U. Efficacy of cineole in patients suffering from acute bronchitis: a placebo-controlled double-blind trial. Cough. 2013;9:25.

In this randomized, double-blind multicenter trial, 242 adults with acute bronchitis received standardized cineole or placebo for ten days. The cineole group showed greater improvement in the study's bronchitis symptom score.

The cineole was taken orally rather than inhaled, but the study adds human respiratory evidence for the constituent associated with cineole-rich materials used in respiratory formulations.
