Happy Hair™

Leave-On Scalp Oil for Thinning Hair

Scalp Oil · At Night, Left In · Cool, Fresh, Herbaceous

More hair in the brush. A part that looks wider than it used to. Hair that simply doesn't feel as full. There are many reasons this can happen, and no scalp oil can honestly address all of them.

Happy Hair™ was made for the part we can approach directly: the scalp. Rosemary leads, with Peppermint, High Elevation Lavender and Helichrysum, all carried in Argan and Borage.

It is an overnight scalp oil for consistent care while hair takes its own time.

Formulation Logic

RESEARCH-FORMULATED™ · Formulation Logic, Applied.

Rosemary is the key ingredient here. Of the four oils in Happy Hair™, it is the one with a human hair study behind it: a 2015 clinical trial comparing rosemary oil with minoxidil. Note that the rosemary in that trial was measured by its 1,8-cineole (the same molecule that gives eucalyptus its sharp, clearing aroma).

Interestingly, rosemary isn't one oil. The same plant can carry quite different chemistry, and each type is called a 'chemotype.' We use Rosemary ct. Verbenone. It carries 1,8-cineole too, but you'll find it softer and greener than the common rosemary, with less of the eucalyptus edge. It has long been the rosemary of choice for skin, and it is the one we prefer on the scalp, night after night.

Peppermint's main constituent is menthol, which gives that quick, cool feel the moment it touches the scalp. High Elevation Lavender is a true lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), and it rounds off the sharper edges of the mint and rosemary. Both have been studied for hair in mice: 3% peppermint oil increased several markers of active hair growth, and this same species of lavender increased hair-covered area.

Helichrysum is there for the condition of the scalp itself. It has been studied for inflammation and tissue repair in skin. Helichrysum, Lavender and Rosemary Verbenone have long been found together in skin-care blends, and here they share a bottle again.

For the base, we chose Argan and Borage. Argan is pressed from the kernels of the Moroccan argan tree and has long been used on hair. Borage seed oil is about 18 to 26% GLA ('gamma-linolenic acid', a fatty acid prized for dry skin), more than twice what evening primrose oil carries. The finished oil is 7% essential oil, more than twice our facial oils (Ever Youthful™ is 3%).

Applications

  • Apply a small amount directly to the scalp, concentrating on the areas you want to give particular attention.
  • Massage lightly with the fingertips to distribute the oil across the scalp.
  • Best applied at night and left in. Consistency matters more than quantity.

Questions & Answers

Before you buy

QCan Happy Hair™ regrow thinning hair?

Hair thinning has many causes, and the cause matters. Hereditary male- and female-pattern hair loss, hormonal changes including perimenopause and menopause, stress or illness, medications, nutritional deficiencies, scalp conditions, and repeated mechanical damage can all contribute.

Happy Hair™ has not been clinically tested as a finished formula, so we make no regrowth promise. The honest answer is that hair takes time: hair-growth studies are measured in months, not days or weeks.

QIs Happy Hair™ an alternative to minoxidil?

It is a different kind of product. Minoxidil is an FDA-approved hair-regrowth drug. Happy Hair™ is a scalp oil built around rosemary, which has limited but notable human evidence of its own. We do not present the two as interchangeable.

In a 2015 randomized study, 100 men with androgenetic alopecia used either rosemary oil or 2% minoxidil, the lower of minoxidil's two common strengths. At three months, neither group showed a significant increase in hair count. At six months, both did, with no significant difference between them. Scalp itching increased in both groups, but was reported more often with minoxidil.

QWhat if my scalp is sensitive?

Everyone's skin and scalp is unique. Happy Hair™ is diluted for scalp use, but how a scalp responds varies from person to person. Try it on a small area first. If irritation occurs, use your own discernment: use less, use it less often, or stop.

Feel & Finish

Fresh and herbaceous. Peppermint arrives first with a clear, cooling lift; rosemary and lavender follow underneath, while Helichrysum gives the blend a softer, honeyed depth.

On the scalp it feels cool and fresh. Left in overnight, it can leave the hair looking flat or greasy until washed, and some oil may transfer to a pillowcase; protect the fabric if needed.

Human study

Panahi Y, Taghizadeh M, Marzony ET, Sahebkar A. Rosemary Oil vs Minoxidil 2% for the Treatment of Androgenetic Alopecia: A Randomized Comparative Trial. Skinmed. 2015;13(1):15–21.

One hundred men with androgenetic alopecia used rosemary oil or 2% minoxidil for six months. Neither group showed a significant hair-count increase at three months; at six months both did, with no significant difference between them.

Animal and laboratory studies

Oh JY, Park MA, Kim YC. Peppermint Oil Promotes Hair Growth without Toxic Signs. Toxicological Research. 2014;30(4):297–304.

In mice, topical 3% peppermint oil increased hair-growth activity and several follicular markers compared with controls.

Lee BH, Lee JS, Kim YC. Hair Growth-Promoting Effects of Lavender Oil in C57BL/6 Mice. Toxicological Research. 2016;32(2):103–108.

Topical Lavandula angustifolia oil increased hair-covered area and affected several follicular parameters in mice.

Andjić M, Božin B, Draginić N, et al. Formulation and Evaluation of Helichrysum italicum Essential Oil-Based Topical Formulations for Wound Healing in Diabetic Rats. Pharmaceuticals. 2021;14(8):813.

0.5% H. italicum essential oil formulations improved wound contraction, hydroxyproline content, and histological repair in a diabetic rat wound model. This is skin-repair evidence, not hair-growth evidence.
