Soothing Skin Extra™ calming body oil for dry, sensitive and irritated skin in an Ananda Apothecary cobalt-blue bottle

Soothing Skin Extra™

Calming Body Oil for Dry, Sensitive & Irritated Skin · Carrier-Based Blend

2026 Summer Cabinet

Soothing Skin Extra™ is probably the simplest way to bring Helichrysum, German Blue Chamomile, and Lavender into regular care for dry, sensitive skin.

The essential oils are carried in Kukui and Tamanu, two rich tropical botanical oils that give the formula its deeply softening, conditioning feel. It is a pleasure to use—a little at a time, regularly, wherever skin feels dry, tight, rough, or uncomfortable.

Overview

This blend was made for skin that needs calm and moisture rather than anything harsh or complicated.

Helichrysum, German Blue Chamomile, and Lavender are used in small, purposeful measure, while Kukui and Tamanu provide the rich, softening base. The carrier oils do much of the work here, giving dry skin lasting comfort and leaving it supple without turning the formula into a heavy salve.

With this kind of oil, regular use matters more than quantity. A little in the morning and again in the evening, or as needed, is generally more useful than a great deal applied only occasionally.

Questions & Answers

Why choose Soothing Skin Extra™ over a plain carrier oil or a fragrance-free cream?

For broad, economical moisturising, a fragrance-free cream is the sensible choice. Soothing Skin Extra™ is for the places a cream doesn't finish the job—areas that stay dry, rough, or easily unsettled. Kukui gives it softness and slip, Tamanu gives it body, and the three aromatic botanicals make it a composed formula rather than a single carrier oil.

Does it have a strong medicinal smell?

It is distinctly botanical, not perfumed. Lavender softens the herbaceous character of German Blue Chamomile and Helichrysum, and Tamanu adds an earthy, nut-like undertone. If you want no scent at all, a plain moisturiser will suit you better; if you enjoy the honest aroma of minimally refined botanical oils, you will likely enjoy this one.

Why is the bottle only 30 mL if this is a body oil?

Because it is not meant to replace an everyday full-body lotion. This is a concentrated oil for the areas that need extra conditioning—hands, elbows, lower legs, recurring dry patches—applied a few drops at a time. Used that way, 30 mL is the right size for the formula, and it lasts far longer than the bottle suggests.

How does this fit into a household with children and pets?

Simply—it is your own targeted body oil, not a family product. Apply it, let it absorb before close contact, and keep the bottle out of reach of children and animals. Do not apply it to children or pets, and do not let animals lick freshly treated skin. Nothing about it enters shared baths, diffusers, or family skincare.

The Formula

Helichrysum italicum has long been one of Ananda’s most valued oils for skin. It has an unusual combination of delicacy and strength, with a fine honeyed-herbal aroma that gives the blend much of its character.

German Blue Chamomile is denser, darker, and more concentrated. Its deep blue colour and powerful herbaceous aroma are unmistakable, and only a small amount is needed within the formula.

Lavender softens the whole composition. It rounds the stronger herbal edges of the Chamomile and Helichrysum, leaving the finished oil calm, balanced, and easy to use.

These essential oils rest in a base of Kukui and Tamanu. Kukui gives the blend softness and slip; Tamanu brings greater body and its characteristic earthy richness. Together they make a proper skin oil—deeply conditioning, protective against further dryness, and especially well suited to skin that is easily unsettled.

Aromatic Profile

Lavender appears first, soft and familiar, followed by the warmer herbal body of German Blue Chamomile and the honeyed-green character of Helichrysum.

Tamanu lies underneath with its naturally earthy, nut-like depth. The finished aroma is gentle, botanical, and close to the skin rather than perfumed.  The oil may carry a faint blue-green tint from the German Chamomile.

How We Use It

Apply a small amount to clean skin wherever additional softness and comfort are wanted.

A little goes a long way. Warm the oil between the fingertips, then press or smooth it gently over the area and allow it to absorb. For skin that remains very dry, use a small amount regularly rather than applying a heavy layer at once.

Apply only to intact skin. Because German Blue Chamomile is deeply coloured, allow the oil to absorb before contact with pale clothing or bed linens.

Ingredients

Bulgarian Helichrysum, German Chamomile, and Lavender.

In a base of organic Tamanu and Kukui carrier oils.

Character & Feel

  • Rich, conditioning texture built on deeply moisturising tropical nut oils.
  • Soft, calming, herbaceous aroma — gentle and close to the skin.
  • Made for dry, sensitive, and easily reactive skin that wants extra comfort.
  • Carries a faint blue-green tint from the German Chamomile.
  • A daily-use body and skin oil, formulated for repeated everyday application.

Notes and Cautions

For external use only. Apply only to intact skin. Do not use on open wounds, broken or blistered skin. Avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes.

German Chamomile and Helichrysum are members of the Asteraceae family. Do not use if you have a known sensitivity to chamomile, daisies, ragweed, marigold, or related plants. The Kukui and Tamanu base are tree-nut-derived oils; those with tree-nut allergy should avoid use. Patch test before first use, particularly on sensitive or reactive skin, and discontinue if redness, itching, burning, or other irritation develops.

The deeply coloured Blue Chamomile may temporarily tint very pale skin and may stain pale fabric.

Safety of the finished formula during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and use in children has not been established. Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use in these groups. For a persistent, severe, or worsening skin condition, seek appropriate medical assessment.

See Safety & Responsible Use for Ananda's general guidance.

Further Study

For those interested, the studies below examine individual oils used in Soothing Skin Extra™ in laboratory, human-skin-explant, and animal models relevant to dry, itchy, or irritated skin. In a DNCB-induced eczema model in mice, topical German Chamomile essential oil reduced visible redness, swelling, epidermal thickening, inflammatory-cell infiltration, and inflammatory mediators, and treated skin showed increased water and sebum content and elasticity.
