Myrrh has always belonged to the quieter hours. There are times when Lavender is too bright, Frankincense rises too quickly, and a floral oil feels almost beside the point. Myrrh does not lift a formula. It gathers it in.
The resin begins as an aromatic exudate from the bark of Commiphora myrrha, then darkens and hardens into the reddish-brown tears known as Myrrh. In this CO₂ select extract the character of the resin is unmistakable: warm, sweetly balsamic, smoky, earthy, and slightly medicinal. A distilled Myrrh can feel spare or almost skeletal; this extract is rounder and more complete, developing slowly and remaining after brighter oils have gone.
Aromatic Character
This is a wonderfully smooth, richly aromatic Myrrh. Dry wood and soft smoke arrive first, followed by dark amber, warm balsam, earth, and a faintly musty resin note. The slightly spicy-medicinal edge is part of its character; it keeps the sweetness from becoming heavy or sentimental.
Myrrh does not reveal itself all at once. On a test strip, the sharper opening settles and the aroma becomes rounder, warmer, and more coherent, the lower register remaining for hours. In formulation it gives lighter oils somewhere to rest, for example: Lavender becomes less fleeting, Rose less exposed, and Frankincense more grounded.

About This Extract
This Myrrh CO₂ comes from a specialist producer with whom Ananda has worked for many years. The relationship rests on the producer's extraction work, consistency, documentation, and the quality of the materials received over time. The extract retains what a Myrrh CO₂ should: smoke without a burnt note, balsamic sweetness without heaviness, and a warm resinous character that holds up well. It has depth, but it is not crude or tar-like.
Current documentation identifies organic Commiphora myrrha resin from Somalia, processed in Germany as a high-pressure CO₂ select extract. The finished extract contains no carrier or added excipient, and approximately 8.0–14.0 kilograms of resin are used to produce one kilogram of extract.
The present lot contains an 86.1% essential-oil fraction and is analytically led by isolindestrene, lindestrene, and curzerene. These figures describe its composition; the material itself is understood through aroma, development, balance, and performance in formulation.
Traditional Uses
Myrrh is not used to make a blend louder. In an evening preparation it slows the aromatic movement; in a body oil or balm it remains after lighter oils have receded; in perfumery it forms the dark, warm centre around which Frankincense, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Lavender, or Rose can develop.
That history remains present in the material itself: an earthly resin carried for centuries into prayer, burial, incense, perfume, and spiritual practice. Its association with mourning also deserves to remain. Myrrh does not erase grief or treat an emotional condition — it offers an aroma that does not insist upon uplift, a serious, inward presence that can feel more honest during loss or transition.
Traditional records include raw resin, tinctures, powders, mouth preparations, incense, and other extracts. Those preparation-specific uses do not transfer automatically to this concentrated CO₂ extract.
Modern research has examined Myrrh resins, volatile oils, tinctures, and solvent extracts for antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, itch-related, and wound-related activity. A supercritical-CO₂ Myrrh oil has shown in-vitro activity against influenza A/H1N1 under the study's formulated test conditions, and separate studies using ethanolic or other resin extracts have reported antimicrobial activity and effects in cell and animal models.
These findings are real but preparation-, concentration-, route-, and model-specific. They do not establish that this Myrrh CO₂ Extract prevents or treats infection, viral illness, inflammation, itching, or wounds, and they do not justify applying the concentrated extract to damaged skin.
Applications
Inhalation
Place a drop on a scent strip, aroma stone, or personal-inhaler wick and return to it over the following minutes as the aroma opens. Especially suited to quiet, contemplative use.
Diffusion
Best diffused as part of a blend rather than alone. Because the extract is viscous, do not add it directly to a water-reservoir ultrasonic diffuser unless the manufacturer specifically permits heavy botanical extracts.
Skin and Body
Suited to body oils, balms, and anointing preparations when properly diluted in a carrier oil and applied to intact skin. Do not apply the concentrated extract undiluted. Patch test any finished preparation before broader use.
Natural Perfumery
Works as a resinous base note. Evaluate first as a bench dilution before adding to a finished blend; its dense, slow character can close a composition when used too freely.

Do not place the extract directly on burning charcoal or an open flame.

The raw material is Commiphora myrrha resin from organic farming in Somalia. The resin is gathered in Somalia and processed in Germany using high-pressure carbon dioxide to produce a CO₂ select extract with no carrier or excipient added.

Batch Composition
The current Certificate of Analysis for batch 532008 reports an 86.1% essential-oil fraction and the following principal constituents:

The certificate also reports a refractive index of 1.5288 at 20°C and a density of 1.0423 g/cm³ at 20°C. These figures describe the current lot and may change with a future lot.

Frankincense Carterii CO₂ Extract — Frankincense brings lift and movement; Myrrh gives the shared resin accord a darker base and longer finish.

Notes and Cautions
- This is a concentrated, undiluted botanical extract for external aromatic use and properly diluted topical use.
- Do not ingest or use as a mouth rinse. Traditional Myrrh tinctures and mouth preparations are different preparations and do not establish oral or oromucosal use for this concentrated CO₂ extract.
- Do not apply undiluted. Use a low dilution, patch test the completed preparation, and discontinue use if redness, itching, swelling, burning, or other irritation develops.
- Allergic contact dermatitis has been reported with Myrrh preparations, and laboratory research identifies weak sensitization potential. Previous tolerance does not rule out a later allergic response.
- Cell studies show that response depends on concentration and preparation, supporting low dilution and limited exposure. These studies do not establish an intact-skin safety or efficacy threshold for this CO₂ extract.
- Avoid eyes, mouth, mucous membranes, broken or inflamed skin, burns, open wounds, and recent surgical incisions. Wound-healing findings from tinctures, sitz baths, mouthwashes, and ointments do not establish safe wound use for this extract.
- No adequate safety data were located for this CO₂ preparation during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or childhood. Avoid use unless directed by a qualified professional.
- Individuals with asthma or marked fragrance sensitivity should begin with minimal exposure and discontinue if respiratory discomfort occurs.
- The viscous extract may mark pale fabric or porous surfaces and may not suit water-reservoir ultrasonic diffusers.
- Store tightly closed, away from direct light and excessive heat. Keep out of reach of children.
