Ananda has worked with Indian Sandalwood for decades. This particular Santalum album comes from a 2021 lot that Ananda chose to retain rather than move quickly through the catalogue.

Time has changed it. The fresher edges of the original distillation have settled into a deeper, more continuous woody-balsamic body. Its sweetness feels less separate from the wood; the aroma has become rounder, smoother, and remarkably persistent.

This is why the oil now sits within the Ananda Reserve — and why it is one of only two Ananda oils currently classified as Dynamically Matured™.


Why This Oil Is in the Ananda Reserve

The Reserve is not simply a collection of expensive or uncommon oils. It is where Ananda holds materials whose provenance, aromatic character, age, scarcity, archive lineage, or particular expression gives us a reason to preserve them apart from the ordinary catalogue.

Some Reserve oils are also Dynamically Matured™. This Sandalwood is one of them.

Essential oils do not become more valuable simply because they become older. Many are best used relatively fresh, and poor storage can diminish an oil rather than improve it.

Certain materials behave differently. When a particular oil has the structure, stability, and aromatic character to warrant it, Ananda may retain the lot and follow its development over time. We evaluate what changes: what softens, what deepens, what becomes more integrated, and whether the material remains worth preserving.

Those oils may enter the Ananda Reserve as Dynamically Matured™ materials. Maturation is not the same thing as simply leaving an oil on a shelf, nor do we use the term to imply that age automatically increases therapeutic value. It is an act of material judgment.

Age is the circumstance. Development is the reason we kept it.

The supplied Ananda records identify the present material as steam-distilled Indian Santalum album heartwood. Earlier catalogue records described the oil as Mysore Sandalwood. Because current documentation does not establish Mysore as the verified region of this particular lot, Ananda retains the historical catalogue lineage without converting it into a current provenance claim.


What Time Has Done

Freshly distilled Sandalwood can present its woody, sweet, and balsamic aspects with greater separation and a slightly more apparent edge. In this 2021 reserve lot, those divisions have softened.

The heartwood character has deepened. The sweetness sits more completely within the wood rather than above it. The balsamic body feels rounder and more continuous, and the aroma remains present through an unusually long drydown.

We do not claim that every Sandalwood will mature in precisely the same way, or that an older Sandalwood is automatically a better one. This is an observation about this material, and the reason Ananda chose to continue stewarding it.


Aromatic Character

Deeply woody, softly balsamic, and naturally sweet.

Indian Santalum album has the most pronounced classical woody character of the Sandalwoods Ananda has worked with, but the wood is never severe. A soft, almost creamy sweetness runs through it, giving the oil its distinctive sensuality and stillness.

In this matured reserve lot, those qualities have become particularly integrated. Warm heartwood appears first, followed by a smooth balsamic sweetness that continues to unfold rather than disappearing after the opening. It is grounded without heaviness, sensual without becoming perfumed, and remarkably persistent.


Why Indian Santalum album

"Sandalwood" is not one aroma repeated across species and origins. Species, climate, proportion and age of heartwood, distillation, storage, and time all influence the material.

The Ananda Archives distinguish Indian Sandalwood by its pronounced woody depth and soft sweetness. Vanuatu Sandalwood was described as comparatively crisp and driftwood-like; New Caledonian as sweet and woody; Australian as earthy, warm, balsamic, and complex. These are not rankings — they are different expressions of the wood.

Indian Santalum album remains the most classically deep and woody of the group Ananda has worked with, while retaining the soft sweetness that makes the species immediately recognizable.

In natural perfumery, that combination gives a composition structure without heaviness. It can soften the movement between florals, resins, spices, and woods while remaining quietly present long into the drydown.

Ananda has carried Indian Sandalwood for decades, historically cataloguing the material as Mysore Sandalwood. The Archives describe fine Indian Santalum album as deeply woody, sweet, and softly balsamic — an oil associated not only with natural perfumery and body preparations, but with stillness, contemplative practice, and the inward movement of attention.

That long relationship with the material matters here. The Ananda Reserve does not begin with rarity for rarity's sake. It begins with enough continuity of practice to recognize when a particular material deserves to be retained. This 2021 Sandalwood is one of those materials.


Traditional Uses

Santalum album has accompanied Indian ritual, incense, perfumery, and Ayurvedic practice for centuries. The wood, powder, paste, incense, hydrodistillate, and essential oil are not interchangeable materials, but they share Sandalwood's longstanding association with devotion, stillness, and contemplative practice.

The Ananda Archives similarly describe its aroma as clarifying and settling to the mind — an aromatic experience traditionally used when attention is meant to turn inward.

Applications

Inhalation

Place a drop on a fragrance blotter, aromatherapy inhaler, or unscented tissue and inhale briefly. Avoid prolonged direct inhalation from the bottle.

Diffusion

Diffuse alone or within a blend, following your diffuser's guidance and diffusing intermittently in a ventilated room. Use less around scent-sensitive individuals, and allow animals to leave the area.

Skin and Body

Suited to facial oils, body oils, and massage preparations when properly diluted in a carrier oil and applied to intact skin. Patch test any finished preparation before broader use.

Indian Sandalwood has long been valued in carefully diluted skin and body preparations. Its soft woody-balsamic aroma settles well into a formula, while published research offers further context for its use in topical care. Much of that evidence remains preliminary, mechanistic, or formulation-specific and should not be treated as proof that the oil treats a skin condition.

Natural Perfumery

Begin with a bench dilution and give the oil time. Indian Sandalwood does not show itself all at once; its full contribution often emerges only after the brighter notes have softened and the composition has entered the drydown.

Use it to deepen florals, soften resins and spices, and create a warm, persistent base without making the formula feel heavy.

Archive Blending Notes

The early Ananda catalogue paired Mysore Sandalwood with Eucalyptus radiata, Basil, Peppermint, and Pine. Used sparingly, these brighter aromatic materials create contrast around Sandalwood's soft, persistent base.
