Aromatic Character

This is a deep, wonderful and distinctly meditative Frankincense, with the rich, smoky character that makes the Indian Serrata so unique. It opens low and warm, with dense resin, dry earth and a beautifully persistent incense note. A softer floral tone gradually appears beneath the smoke, giving the extract greater dimension without diminishing its darker character.

The CO₂ extraction preserves a remarkable sense of the original resin, producing an aroma that is fuller, heavier and less volatile than a steam-distilled Frankincense oil. This is not the bright, citrus-wood expression of Carterii. Serrata is darker, earthier and more contemplative, with a warm balsamic body that remains present throughout. It is a truly beautiful Frankincense and a real treat for those drawn to the deeper, more meditative resins.

About This Extract

This Indian Frankincense Serrata CO₂ select extract was produced in March 2022 and remains within its supplier retest period through March 2027. The current Certificate of Analysis identifies a light-yellow to orange, clear oil containing 88.7% essential oil, with no carriers or excipients.

Its volatile fraction is led by alpha-thujene at 49.9%, with serratol and incensole reported together at 16.0%. Alpha-pinene is present at 5.7%, while limonene is comparatively low at 0.98%. This batch profile is materially different from Ananda's current Carterii CO₂ and supports the catalogue distinction between the two extracts.  This is a very different Frankincense from Ananda’s current Carterii CO₂: less citrus-conifer lift, more smoke, earth, and resin, and a slower, more contemplative finish.

The certificate reports beta-boswellic acid at 0.16%. That measured amount confirms that this CO₂ select extract contains a small non-volatile resin fraction not represented by a conventional steam-distilled essential oil. It does not make the product equivalent to a standardized Boswellia supplement or justify supplement-derived clinical claims.

This is a volatile-rich CO₂ select extract. It is not a steam-distilled essential oil and should not be described as a CO₂ total extract.

Why This Extract Is Used

Frankincense Serrata CO₂ occupies a different side of Ananda’s Frankincense catalogue. The Ananda Archives describe Frankincense as “vertical”—an aroma that rises like smoke. Serrata has that upward movement, but it begins lower to the ground, with warm resin, dry earth, and a distinctly smoky incense character.

Where Carterii brings bright citrus, soft conifer, and dry wood, Serrata is deeper and more inward. It does not open quickly or reveal itself all at once. The aroma develops slowly, becoming warmer, fuller, and more balsamic as the lighter notes recede.

For perfumers and formulators, Serrata can give weight to florals, woods, and other resins without turning the complete composition into a simple incense accord. Used sparingly, it brings gravity and persistence while allowing the materials around it to continue moving.

Boswellia serrata is an accepted species native to the Indian subcontinent. Its resin contains volatile terpenes, diterpene alcohols, triterpenes, and boswellic acids, but the proportions vary materially with species, raw material, and extraction method.

Research involving standardized Boswellia extracts, isolated boswellic acids, supplements, resin preparations, essential oils, and laboratory models cannot be transferred automatically to this retail CO₂ select extract. The current product is intended for aromatic and external formulation use, not ingestion.

Within Ananda’s practice, Serrata is chosen not because it is a stronger version of Carterii, but because it moves differently: darker, smokier, slower, and distinctly contemplative.

Which Frankincense CO₂ Should I Choose?

Choose Serrata for a deeper, darker, more meditative Frankincense. Warm, smoky, earthy, resinous, with a substantial balsamic body — well suited to meditation, evening use, grounding blends, and formulas calling for weight and incense-like depth.

Choose Carterii for a brighter, more uplifting, classically recognizable Frankincense. Fresh woody-citrus character (the Somali Frankincense profile), with the CO₂ extraction lending greater warmth and continuity than a more volatile essential oil. Well suited to daytime use, reflective blends, skin care, and formulas wanting lift without losing the resin's body.

In short: Serrata is smokier and contemplative; Carterii is brighter and woodier. The choice comes down to which character you're drawn to.

Cultivation and Sourcing

The resin comes from India and is extracted in Germany using high-pressure carbon dioxide. The current Certificate of Analysis identifies the ingredient as NATRUE Approved.

The extraction contains no carrier or excipient. No current organic, wildcrafted, or cultivation claim is made for this batch. Relevant analytical, batch, and traceability documentation is maintained in Ananda's internal records.

Serratol and incensole are reported as a combined value and cannot be separated from the supplied data. Octyl acetate and incensole acetate were not detected.

Separate quantitative monitoring of the complete extract reports beta-boswellic acid at 0.16%, estragole at 2.3%, and methyleugenol at 0.55%. The quantitative extract values control safety calculations where they differ from the normalized volatile-fraction profile.

These figures describe this particular batch. They should not be used alone to rank quality, predict a clinical outcome, or compare Frankincense preparations without considering extraction type, the complete analysis, and direct aromatic evaluation.

Pairs Well With

Frankincense Carterii CO₂ Extract — Carterii lifts Serrata’s darker resin with fresh citrus, soft conifer, and dry wood. Together they create a fuller Frankincense accord, with brightness at the opening and smoke and balsamic depth beneath it.

Myrrh CO₂ Extract — Myrrh extends Serrata’s dry resin and incense character, adding a darker, earthier base. Together they create a solemn, old-world resin blend without becoming flat or excessively heavy.
