Our Story
The Ananda Apothecary™ began with Eric R. Cêch and a particular way of working with aromatic materials.
The botanical name mattered. But it was never enough.
Eric sourced oils from skilled growers and distillers, then compared multiple examples of the same botanical through organoleptic evaluation — aromatic structure, balance, character. GC/MS and technical documentation established identity and composition. Among technically sound oils, the final selection was still made by the material itself: the one with the most complete aromatic character, the one worth working with.
That combination — material quality, analytical understanding, and aromatic judgment — became the foundation of the Ananda standard.
The Work
Eric's work with materials was inseparable from research.
He studied historical use, chemistry, therapeutic literature, and emerging research, then applied that knowledge directly to selection and formulation. The principle was consistent: understand what is known about a material, understand the material actually in hand, and formulate accordingly.
Each ingredient had a reason to be there. Some formulas became Ananda standard offerings. Others evolved as research advanced or better materials became available.
CO₂ extracts are one example. Eric adopted them selectively when the extraction recovered something important that steam distillation did not, or produced a material he considered more useful or aromatically complete. The question was never whether CO₂ was inherently better. It was whether it made a meaningful difference in that particular material.
For more than fifteen years, Eric also documented and taught this way of working through articles, research reviews, formulation records, and practical discussions with the Ananda community.
RESEARCH-FORMULATED™ gives a name to a practice already established in the work: research informs the formulation; judgment determines what belongs in it.
What Accumulated
Over time, the work left a substantial record: research, formulations, sourcing relationships, batch information, material comparisons, and years of practical discussion.
That record now forms the foundation of the Ananda Library and the Forum Archive being restored from the original community.
Some of the materials themselves were preserved. Selected woods, roots, and resins underwent Ananda's proprietary Dynamically Matured™ process in 2019, then remained in our custody as they continued to develop naturally over the following years. Other Reserve materials, including Rose, were preserved without intentional maturation and evolved simply through time.
Released for the first time in 2026, these materials now form the Ananda Reserve. Their provenance, custody, and elapsed time cannot be recreated.
The value of that history isn't that it's old. It's that it accumulated — and can still be used.
Continuity
Eric died in 2018. Ananda continued for a period and closed in 2022. The company stopped; the work remained — formulas, research, materials, sourcing relationships, and a standard formed through years of practice.
Anita Felice had worked alongside Eric early on. When The Ananda Apothecary™ returned in 2026, she took stewardship of that work alongside her partner, Anthony Becker, who supports the operations and relationships required to carry it forward.
The work is now based in Southern France, closer to many of the growers, distillers, and agricultural regions producing the materials Ananda works with.
The geography has changed. The research continues. New materials and methods become available.
What remains is the discipline established at the beginning: know the material, understand the evidence, and decide deliberately where it belongs.
The standard continues.
