Clary Sage

Salvia sclarea · Provence, France · Organic Grown · Steam Distilled

Every so often an oil arrives that is better than expected. This Clary Sage was one of them. This was the surprise of the French selections we offer, it is outstanding. This organic grown Clary sage is warm, soft, expansive and distinctly floral-herbaceous.  Clary Sage has long occupied a particular place in aromatherapy for women for relaxation, emotional settling, menstrual comfort and calming aromatic use. It sits naturally at the intersection of menstrual transition and nervous-system support.

This French lot is soft, herbaceous and unusually rich in linalyl acetate, with linalool as its second major constituent. In practice, that gives it a quieter, more settling character — particularly useful when menstruation, perimenopause or menopause arrives with tension, irritability, disrupted sleep or difficulty settling.

Human research has examined Clary Sage in PMS, dysmenorrhea and menopause, including its relationship to menstrual discomfort, autonomic balance, cortisol, serotonin, anxiety and sleep.

What Is Clary Sage Best For?

  • Menstrual transition — monthly cycles and perimenopause/menopause alike
  • Evening use, when tension or irritability makes it hard to settle
  • Calming, grounding aromatic blends
  • Personal blending — rounding florals, citrus or warmer aromatic oils

Questions & Answers

Before you buy

QWhy is Clary Sage particularly relevant during perimenopause and menopause?

Because hormonal transition affects more than reproductive hormones.

For many women, perimenopause and menopause also bring changes in sleep, mood, stress tolerance, irritability and the ability to settle.

A human study in menopausal women found that inhalation of Clary Sage was followed by a significant decrease in cortisol and an increase in serotonin.

That does not make Clary Sage a substitute for estrogen or hormone therapy. It places the oil more specifically on the nervous-system and stress-response side of menopausal transition. This is where we find it most useful.

QDoes Clary Sage raise estrogen?

Human studies have not shown that it does.

Clary Sage has long been associated with estrogen because it contains sclareol. In this batch, sclareol is present at 0.4%.

A 2017 study measured salivary estrogen in perimenopausal women after exposure to ten essential oils. Rose Otto and Geranium produced significant increases. Clary Sage did not.

A 2026 randomized crossover study reached a similar conclusion from another direction: women using Clary Sage showed improvements in several menstrual symptoms, but estradiol and progesterone did not significantly change.

The distinction is useful. Clary Sage can be relevant to hormonal transition without acting as an estrogen replacement.

QWhat does it mean that this Clary Sage is linalyl-acetate-led?

Linalyl acetate is the dominant constituent in this batch at 59.7%. Linalool follows at 21.8%. Together they make up 81.5% of the documented composition.

Linalyl acetate belongs to a family of aromatic compounds called esters. Ester-rich essential oils tend to have a softer, rounder character and are commonly used where easing tension and settling the nervous system are part of the intended direction.

Linalool supports that profile and is also widely studied in aromatic materials associated with relaxation.

This chemistry helps explain why this particular Clary Sage belongs most naturally in menstrual-transition, evening and nervous-system applications.

It also explains its relationship to Lavender: both oils can be rich in linalyl acetate and linalool, but Clary Sage expresses that chemistry through a warmer, greener and more herbaceous aromatic profile.

How to Use

For perimenopause and menopause: diffuse during periods of tension, irritability or difficulty settling.

For PMS and menstrual comfort: use aromatically during the premenstrual and menstrual phases. It may also be included, properly diluted, in topical abdominal formulations.

For sleep and evening use: diffuse alone or pair with Lavender when the mind remains active at the end of the day. Its linalyl-acetate- and linalool-rich chemistry supports its place in evening formulations without positioning Clary Sage as a sleep treatment.

Aroma

Fresh, herbaceous, slightly sweet and warming — a rounder, softer profile than common sage, with a characteristic depth that makes it a distinctive middle-to-top note in a blend.

Notes & Cautions

  • For external aromatic and properly diluted topical use. Dilute before applying to the skin.
  • Overuse of clary sage, like many essential oils, can result in headache or dizziness, and may raise blood pressure. Use conservatively and pay attention to how your body responds.
  • Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Patch test before topical use. Discontinue if irritation or sensitivity develops.
  • Do not use if Pregnant or during pregnancy. it is a potent emmenagogue and uterine stimulant that may trigger contractions.

Clary sage blends especially well with High Elevation Lavender — its warm, herbaceous character rounds out lavender's softer, ester-led profile, making the two a natural pairing for evening or calming blends.

Further Study

The research below concerns Clary Sage essential oil as studied in the published literature. It does not establish that this particular French batch treats menopause, PMS, dysmenorrhea or another diagnosed condition.

Clary Sage & Menopause

Lee KB, Cho E, Kang YS. Changes in 5-hydroxytryptamine and Cortisol Plasma Levels in Menopausal Women After Inhalation of Clary Sage Oil. Phytotherapy Research. 2014;28(11):1599–1605.

In menopausal women, Clary Sage inhalation was associated with a significant decrease in cortisol and an increase in serotonin. The study examined stress and neurotransmitter response rather than estrogen.

Clary Sage inhalation was associated with improvements in menstrual pain, sleep disturbance, irritability and anxiety. Estradiol and progesterone did not significantly change.

Clary Sage & Estrogen

Shinohara K, Doi H, Kumagai C, Sawano E, Tarumi W. Effects of Essential Oil Exposure on Salivary Estrogen Concentration in Perimenopausal Women. Neuro Endocrinology Letters. 2017;37(8):567–572.

Ten essential oils were examined in perimenopausal women. Geranium and Rose Otto produced significant increases in salivary estrogen; Clary Sage did not.

Clary Sage & PMS

Geethanjali S, Venugopal V, Poonguzhali S, Maheshkumar K. Effect of Clary Sage Oil as an Aromatherapy on Cardiac Autonomic Function Among Patients with Premenstrual Syndrome — A Randomized Controlled Study. Obesity Medicine. 2020;18:100193.

Researchers observed changes in autonomic nervous-system activity after Clary Sage inhalation in women with PMS, including measures consistent with increased parasympathetic influence.

Clary Sage in Menstrual-Comfort Formulation

Han SH, Hur MH, Buckle J, Choi J, Lee MS. Effect of Aromatherapy on Symptoms of Dysmenorrhea in College Students: A Randomized Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial.

A topical abdominal blend containing Lavender, Clary Sage and Rose reduced menstrual-cramp severity. Because several oils were used together, the study supports the formulation rather than attributing the result to Clary Sage alone.
