We went to Bulgaria for the roses.
In June 2019, during the Rose Valley harvest, we found the material we were looking for — and chose it there, at the source. This is that Rose Otto.
Aromatic Character
This is not a subtle oil.
Open the bottle and it arrives all at once. It is rich, honeyed, unmistakably rose, but with a lift that keeps it from ever sitting heavy. It doesn't smell like a rose blossom so much as what a rose blossom is trying to become.
Give it a moment. The sweetness deepens into something warmer, almost luminous, and it keeps unfolding — long after you'd expect it to settle, it's still moving.
We have smelled a great deal of Rose Otto over the years. This one still gets us every time.
Why This Rose Otto
We went looking for something we couldn't quite put into words yet — trusting we'd know it when we found it.
It wasn't only the region, though the region matters enormously. It was the people. The farmer's eye. The judgment in a distillation that comes from decades of doing it — part craft, part instinct, something closer to devotion than to procedure.
We arrived while the flowers were still being gathered. At the farm we chose, the women picking were singing, talking, clearly glad to be there, some with a toddler in tow. It was familial. At another farm we visited, the same work was happening in near silence — bags being filled and weighed, nothing more. Both were technically doing the same job. Yet they did not feel the same.
Beneath the stills at the farm we chose, the family dog slept straight through the whole thing. The aroma of rose full in the air around him, nobody paying him any mind. Nothing about that moment was staged for visitors. It was simply the work. We noticed.
That kind of provenance doesn't happen by accident. Bulgaria's Rose Valley has earned its reputation over centuries. Sheltered between the Balkan Mountains and the Sredna Gora range, the valley gives Rosa damascena an unusually favorable flowering climate — cool, humid spring mornings, moderate temperatures, limited swings between day and night, steady soil moisture, conditions that help the flowers develop the aromatic profile Bulgarian Rose Otto became known for.
More than three centuries of cultivation and distillation have built a body of regional knowledge: when to pick, how quickly to move flowers from field to still, how to distill a material whose quality can shift within hours of harvest. Bulgarian rose oil became the benchmark material in European perfumery long before essential oils became a modern wellness category, and that reputation is now formally recognized: Bulgarsko rozovo maslo - Bulgarian Rose Oil holds Protected Geographical Indication status in the European Union, one of a small number of essential oils granted that recognition.
This is why Ananda traveled to the Rose Valley, rather than simply shopping for Rose Otto, one of the two great historical centers of Rose Otto production in the world, and we still visited more than one farm before choosing the oil.
Ananda uses many extraordinary botanicals inside formulations. Rose Otto is different. It does not need a formula around it to justify its place. Its rarity, concentration, aromatic complexity, and provenance make the material itself the experience. A few drops can perfume the skin, alter a personal blend, or become the floral center of a carefully composed preparation.
The distinction is not quantity. It is material.
Why It Is in the Ananda Reserve
Rose Otto is already exceptionally rare, and the finished oil varies from grower to grower, distillation to distillation. But rarity alone doesn't put a material in the Ananda Reserve.
We chose this oil for what we found at the source — not only the flowers, but the people working them, and the care in how the material was handled from field to still.
The flowers make Rose Otto rare. The selection is what makes this one Ananda Reserve.
Rose Otto is not a seasonal curiosity within Ananda — it's one of the materials against which we define the Reserve itself. The current material is finite. Rose Otto's place within Ananda is not. We will continue to carry it. It deserves to be here.

Questions & Answers
Why has Rose been used for both composure and skin?
Those two uses can appear unrelated, but the research gives them an interesting point of contact.
Human studies of Rose essential oil have reported changes associated with reduced physiological arousal and greater subjective calm. Separate research examining experimental stress found that Rose essential-oil inhalation reduced both the stress-related rise in cortisol and the accompanying increase in transepidermal water loss, a measure associated with disruption of skin-barrier function.
That does not establish Rose Otto as a treatment for anxiety or a skin disorder. What it does provide is useful context for something traditional practice has long observed: Rose frequently appears in formulations concerned with both emotional composure and skin that feels depleted, reactive, or affected by periods of stress.
Why is true Bulgarian Rose Otto such a rare material — and why does it come in such a small bottle?
Rose Otto begins with an extraordinary imbalance between flower and finished oil. Producing roughly one kilogram requires about 3–5 metric tons of freshly harvested Rosa damascena flowers. The harvest is short, highly seasonal, and traditionally gathered early in the day, before heat changes the aromatic character of the blossoms.
Most of what is harvested never becomes essential oil. Rhe Otto is the minute volatile fraction recovered from that enormous quantity of flowers. That's also why it's offered in a small bottle and used sparingly: the material itself is scarce, and it's highly diffusive. A very small amount goes a long way in perfumery, aromatic use, or a skin formulation.
The rarity begins with the flower. The Reserve designation begins with selection.
Why choose Rose Otto rather than Rose Absolute?
Both begin with Rosa damascena, but extraction creates two distinctly different aromatic materials.
Rose Otto is obtained by steam distillation, which is lighter in movement, more expansive, and well suited to aromatic use, personal fragrance, and very low-level inclusion in skin formulations. Rose Absolute is produced through solvent extraction. It has a fuller, heavier floral profile, usually richer in phenylethyl alcohol, wax-like constituents, and other less-volatile aromatic materials than Otto. The absolute is used in premium perfumery, and for facial-oil aroma where a long-lasting floral character matters. That's why it appears in Ever Bright™, our under-eye care serum, for its aromatic contribution.
Neither is the "better" Rose. Extraction changes the material — and therefore changes what we ask it to do. Ananda does not offer Rose Absolute as a standalone Reserve material; this Reserve is Rose Otto only.
Is this a current harvest, and why does this Reserve matter if Rose Otto can still be sourced?
No. This is the June 2019 harvest, selected by Ananda at the source and held since. It is not an ongoing production lot, and Ananda issues no current-batch verification for it.
Rose Otto as a material can still be sourced elsewhere, including from Ananda in future seasons. What can't be replicated is this specific one: a harvest we witnessed, from growers we chose, evaluated and preserved for years beyond that original selection. Once this lot is gone, that particular expression goes with it — even if Rose Otto as a category remains available.

Personal Fragrance
Dilute appropriately and wear alone or as the floral heart of a personal aromatic composition. Rose Otto is highly diffusive; very little is needed.
Aromatic Use
Use a small amount in a diffuser or personal aromatic preparation. One drop may be sufficient depending on the size of the space and the desired intensity.
Skin Formulation
Use at very low concentration within a properly formulated facial or body preparation. Rose Otto is a material to formulate with sparingly, not an essential oil to apply neat or in quantity.

This Rose Otto was steam distilled from Rosa damascena flowers harvested in Bulgaria's Rose Valley in June 2019. Ananda visited multiple growers during that harvest and selected this material directly at the source, evaluating the finished oil before it entered reserve.
Because this is retained reserve material rather than an ongoing production lot, no current-batch verification, Certificate of Analysis, or GC–MS report is issued for it. Pairs Well With & Found In
Indian Sandalwood — Rose brings radiance and floral lift to Sandalwood's deep woody base; Sandalwood gives the Rose greater warmth and persistence.
Frankincense Carterii CO₂ — bright resin and soft citrus create space around Rose's floral character without competing with it. Neroli extends the luminous floral register while keeping the composition airy and refined.
Rose Otto also pairs naturally with Jasmine, Myrrh, Ylang Ylang, Dark Patchouli, Vetiver, Lavender, Roman Chamomile, Bergamot FCF, Frankincense Serrata, Bulgarian Helichrysum, Melissa, and German Chamomile.

Rose Otto is a core material within the Ananda Reserve and is intended to remain part of the Ananda catalogue year-round. The material offered here is the finite June 2019 distillation selected by Ananda in Bulgaria. Once this reserve is depleted, future Rose Otto offerings may come from a different harvest or lot and will be evaluated independently before entering the Reserve. The 2019 provenance belongs to this material. The standard continues.

Forty healthy volunteers were assessed for autonomic and emotional responses to Rose oil. Compared with placebo, exposure was associated with decreases in breathing rate and systolic blood pressure, and participants described themselves as calmer and more relaxed. The experiment used transdermal exposure while olfactory stimulation was excluded, so it should not be treated as equivalent to ordinary diffusion or fragrance wear.
