Rosa damascena

Some oils are sourced. This one was witnessed — in the fields, at dawn, beside the people who grew it.

Bulgaria's Rose Valley, June 2019. We were there. What we found, and why we chose this particular farm over the others we visited, is in the Lineage Statement at the bottom of this page. Read that last. It will mean more by then.

There are four exclusive oils in this reserve. This is one of them. When they are gone, the conditions that produced them cannot be replicated.

Distillation: Steam (traditional double distillation)
Origin: Rose Valley, Bulgaria — Kazanlak/Karlovo region
Plant Part: Petals
Cultivation: Certified organic
Latin Name: Rosa damascena
Note: Top–Middle

Overview

"Otto" is the traditional term distinguishing steam-distilled rose oil from Rose Absolute, which is solvent-extracted and aromatically heavier. Rose Otto is lighter, more expansive, and more volatile — with greater aromatic lift and clarity. Where Absolute presents density, Otto presents radiance.

This Rose Otto reflects the classic Bulgarian profile: luminous, balanced, and finely structured. It is valued for clarity and composure rather than force — and it has continued to develop in that direction in reserve since 2019.

Bulgarian Rosa damascena is not simply a regional preference among perfumers and formulators. It is a distinct botanical expression, shaped by over three centuries of cultivation in a protected mountain basin — the Rose Valley sits between the Balkan Mountains and Sredna Gora, forming a microclimate where cool nights, morning dew, long mild springs, and protection from wind combine to slow petal development and allow aromatic compounds to accumulate in concentrations found almost nowhere else on earth. Damask roses arrived in this valley from Persia or Syria in the 16th or 17th century. What has evolved since is its own thing entirely.

We know the farmers who grew these roses. We watched the distillation. The integrity of what arrived in our hands was confirmed not from a document, but from presence.

About This Oil

Rose Otto has long been selected for emotional balance, aromatic refinement, and skin-care formulation. It is among the most studied botanicals in aromatic emotional support applications — and one of the most consistently present materials in high-integrity facial formulations throughout the history of perfumery and botanical skin care.

Aromatically, it is often chosen during periods of stress, grief, or emotional transition: lift without sharpness, presence without weight. In topical work, it is widely used for dry, sensitive, and mature skin — integrating seamlessly into facial oils, serums, and anointing blends when properly diluted.

True rose otto is among the most chemically complex essential oils in existence — a molecular richness that supports genuine aromatic development over time rather than simple deterioration. This oil has been reserve-held under controlled conditions since 2019. It has not been rushed, and it shows.

The yield: approximately 60,000 roses to produce a single ounce of oil. There is a reason this material is called liquid gold. Standing in that field at dawn, watching the petals being gathered by hand before the sun could diminish them — it becomes less metaphor and more fact.

Reserve Standard

Not every oil benefits from deliberate aging. Some arrive complete.

This Rosa damascena was evaluated at source in June 2019 and found to be exceptional in its fresh state. No proprietary aging process was applied — it did not need one. It was placed in reserve in recognition that materials of this caliber deserve stability, time, and patience before release.

What it has continued to become is the natural result of proper stewardship and the oil's own remarkable molecular complexity. Reserve-held since 2019. Drawn from a finite lot.

Aromatic Profile

Fresh, honeyed, and deeply floral — with extraordinary diffusive depth. This one is particularly full and well rounded.

Opening: Bright airy floral, luminous and lightly citrus-touched Heart: Soft, rounded, classic rose body — honeyed and warm Base: Clean, beeswax-like finish; smooth, long-persisting, quietly expansive

Rose Otto differs from Rose Absolute by presenting more top-note radiance and less density through the base. This expression has continued to round and integrate in reserve — green edges softened, the honey deepened. Those who know great rose oil will recognize immediately what time and proper holding produce.

Functional Orientation

Traditionally selected for:

Emotional harmonizing and nervous system use — settling during stress, grief, or transition Skin-care formulation for dry, sensitive, and mature skin High-end perfumery as a heart and base material of extraordinary aromatic authority Aphrodisiac and sensory-reconnective application.

Sensory and intimate use — Rose otto has been selected for intimate and sensory connection across cultures for centuries. Its action is not stimulant but restorative: where anxiety, grief, stress, or emotional distance have created disconnection, rose oil works through nervous system relaxation to restore availability. It is among the most historically documented botanicals for this application, and the research on its anxiolytic and autonomic nervous system effects provides a clear mechanism for what traditional use has always described. You may also see Patchouli for this use.

Performs with equal integrity in aromatic use, topical formulation, and personal fragrance.

Blending Compatibility

Patchouli · Sandalwood · Frankincense · Cedarwood · Vetiver · Bergamot · Ylang Ylang · Neroli · Jasmine · Geranium · Clary Sage · Chamomile · Palmarosa

As a fixative and heart note, it extends and rounds almost everything around it. A small amount is always sufficient — this oil has presence that does not need to announce itself.

Application Context

  • Appropriate for aromatic, topical, facial, and formulation use when properly diluted.
  • May be worn directly on skin as a personal fragrance at conservative amounts if sensitivity is not a concern.
  • Patch test recommended prior to first use.
  • Use rate and method should reflect experience level and application context.

Professional Notes

Exceptional yield ratio — approximately 60,000 roses per ounce of oil Natural wax fraction present — oil may partially solidify at cooler temperatures; this is normal and not a quality concern Certified organic source material, personally sourced at farm level Strong fixative behavior — extends longevity of surrounding aromatic materials in formulation Reserve-held since June 2019; no proprietary aging applied Drawn from a finite lot

Lineage Statement

In June 2019, we traveled to Bulgaria's Rose Valley and visited several cultivators. We were not looking for the largest operation or the most efficient one. We were looking for the right one.

We found it in a smaller, more intimate farm — one not oriented toward mass production, but toward the integrity of the process itself. The difference was apparent immediately, and not only in the fields or the distillation room.

The women picking the flowers that morning were laughing. Chatting. Singing. Moving through the rows of roses in the early light the way people move when the work means something to them.

We have never forgotten that. And we have never stopped believing it matters — that the energy present at the moment of harvest, the hands that gathered these petals, the voices that filled that field at dawn — is part of what this oil carries.

We selected this cultivator because of what we confirmed analytically — and because of what we felt standing in that field. But if we're being honest, the moment that settled it happened in the distillation area.

The operation was running at full capacity. Seven-foot distillation tanks, the process in full drive, the air thick with rose aroma in a way that stops conversation mid-sentence. And there at the base of those tanks, completely and contentedly asleep, was the farm dog.

We were told he had a particular fondness for burying himself in the aromatics. On this day he had simply found the best seat in the room and closed his eyes. He knew where to be.

There is something about an animal that comfortable in a place that tells you everything about the place. The calm in that room — the people, the process, the dog — was not performed. It was the natural condition of a farm that had been doing this work the right way for a long time.

That is the standard this oil was held to before it entered the reserve. That is what it continues to reflect. We are most honored to offer this treasure.
